Int'l webinar on Srimanta Sankaradeva

The Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva, a leading organisation promoting the legacy of Srimanta Sankaradeva, is planning to hold a series of global webinars on different facets of Sankaradeva Studies starting in December 2021. Scholars from India and abroad will take part in the webinars. All webinars will be moderated by author and researcher Dr. Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, who is also President of the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva.

The inaugural lecture will be held on 19th December 2021 at 5 pm IST. It will be delivered by Dr Arshiya Sethi, an independent dance scholar, author and columnist from New Delhi. The topic of her lecture will be “Going Global: Sankaradeva and the Living Arts of the Sattras”.

The second lecture will be delivered by Geetha Thandi, a Kuchipudi dance practitioner, California, USA on 9th January. She will talk on “Comparison between Sattriya dance and Kuchipudi dance”.

The third lecture will be held on 6th February. It will be delivered by Dr. Binoy K. Bordoloi, Chairman of the Naamghar Association of America as well as Bor-Medhi. His topic is “Comparison between Christianity and Eka Sarana Nama Dharma”.

Webinars will be held on the Google Meet platform and registration links will be made available in the Society’s social media page. For every lecture, registration will have to be done separately. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti is doing overall supervision of the programmes. The subsequent programmes will be announced later.

It may be mentioned that the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva, established in 2011, runs a resource website on Sankaradeva legacy www.sankaradeva.com. It organised an international conference in Majuli in 2012. It has organised several hands-on workshops on Bargeet, Manuscript preparation & painting, Aharya of Ankiya Bhaona etc sponsored by Sangeet Natak Akademi. It runs an Aharya production centre, products of which were displayed in Make-in India exhibitions in Mumbai and Kolkata.

In a major development, NCERT has formally promised to include Srimanta Sankaradeva in school curriculum. They have communicated it to Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva (SSS). Chandra Sadayat, Prof and Head, Deptt of Education in Languages (DEL), NCERT informed SSS President Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti about it in a letter.
