Nearly 300 Differently-Abled Children in Nazira Lose Assistive Devices in Floods

NAZIRA, August 1, 2026 — Nearly 300 differently-abled children in Assam's Nazira Co-District have been left in severe hardship after the recent Dikhow River floods swept away essential assistive devices used in their daily lives.

According to reports, the floods washed away wheelchairs, tricycles, hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, walkers, walking frames and toilet chairs, leaving many children without the equipment they depend on for mobility and everyday care.

Parents and guardians are now struggling to manage routine activities, with the loss of these devices further compounding the difficulties faced by children already living with disabilities.

Expressing concern over the situation, Amarjyoti Nath, president of the parents' association of the affected children, appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to provide immediate assistance.

He urged the government to expedite rehabilitation measures and replace the lost assistive devices so that the affected children can regain mobility, independence and access to essential care.

The appeal comes as many flood-affected families in Nazira continue to recover from the widespread destruction caused by the Dikhow River floods.
