Veteran Assamese singer Binapani Gogoi Borgohain dies
NAZIRA, October 19, 2026 — Veteran singer Binapani Gogoi Borgohain, a recipient of the Assam Government’s artist pension, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dibrugarh. She was in her eighties.
A resident of Gohain Gaon in Chunpora, Hahchara, Borgohain had been suffering from age-related ailments and respiratory complications.
Known for her melodious voice, she had the opportunity to associate with legendary artists, including Dilip Sharma, Sudakshina Sharma and Dr Bhupen Hazarika. Her singing was often compared to that of renowned Assamese singer Dipali Borthakur.
In recognition of her contribution to music, the Assam Government awarded her a one-time artist pension in 2004. Despite her talent and association with prominent figures in Assamese music, she remained a low-profile artist who stayed away from publicity.
Her death has been mourned as a significant loss to the cultural fraternity of Sivasagar and the wider Assamese music community.
A devout woman and senior cultural activist, she is survived by five sons, five married daughters, their spouses, grandchildren and other relatives.
