The Congress party organised a protest rally in Nazira on Wednesday under the slogan “Save Vote, Save Country”, demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities and violations of the Constitution. The protesters also sought immediate financial assistance for flood-affected families allegedly left out of the government's relief package.

The rally was jointly organised by the Nazira Rural, Simaluguri and Nazira Municipal Block Congress committees. More than 200 party office-bearers and workers, including women, youth and Seva Dal members, took part in the demonstration.

The programme began at Gandhi Maidan in Nazira town, where participants paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and lit ceremonial lamps. The procession subsequently moved through the town and culminated in a demonstration outside the Nazira Co-District Commissioner's office.

Raising slogans such as “Save the Constitution”, “Remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar” and “Save Vote, Save Country”, the protesters accused the BJP-led government of undermining democratic institutions. They demanded the removal and arrest of the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that he had facilitated electoral malpractice in favour of the ruling party. These were allegations made by the protesters.

The demonstration was led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Lakshminath Handique and spokesperson and secretary Abdur Rahman, along with presidents and general secretaries of the concerned rural and municipal block Congress committees.

Congress alleges irregularities in flood relief distribution

A major focus of the protest was the alleged discrimination in the distribution of the ₹15,000 one-time financial assistance announced by the government for families affected by the devastating floods of July 19.

Congress leaders alleged that several genuinely affected families had not received the promised assistance, while some households that reportedly suffered no flood damage had been given the amount. They also claimed that multiple members of certain families had received the assistance separately.

The protesters demanded that the government immediately extend the announced relief to all eligible flood-affected families and investigate the alleged irregularities to prevent the misuse of public funds.

They also urged the government to release without delay the compensation announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for people who suffered losses in the floods.

Memorandum submitted to Chief Minister

Following the demonstration outside the Co-District Commissioner's office, the Congress submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister through the Co-District Commissioner.

The memorandum, signed by Nazira Block Congress Committee president Diganta Sandikoi and general secretary Apurba Baruah, highlighted the alleged disparities in relief distribution and called for urgent corrective measures.

The Congress leaders reiterated that all eligible flood victims should receive the promised financial assistance without discrimination and that allegations of irregularities in the disbursement of government funds should be impartially investigated.

The protest concluded with a call to protect democratic values, the Constitution and the rights of flood-affected people.
