Kokrajhar Marks District Day with Tribute to History and Cultural Heritage
Speakers highlight the district's administrative evolution, cultural diversity and the need to preserve its rich legacy during commemorative programme.
The Kokrajhar district administration on Wednesday celebrated District Day with a commemorative programme at the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner's Office, marking the formation of the district and reflecting on its historical, cultural and developmental journey.
The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by the felicitation of distinguished guests and resource persons. Officials and staff of the District Commissioner's Office presented a chorus celebrating the spirit, heritage and unity of Kokrajhar.
Speaking on the occasion, Padma Shri awardee Dr Mangal Sing Hazowary recounted his long association with Kokrajhar and reflected on the district's transformation over the years. He stressed the importance of preserving the region's rich cultural heritage and called for collective efforts to protect its traditions and identity for future generations.
National Best Teacher Award recipient Gautam Dev Sharma traced the administrative history of Kokrajhar, noting that the area was originally part of the undivided Goalpara district. He said it became a Civil Sub-Division in 1957 after being carved out of the then Dhubri Sub-Division and was upgraded to a full-fledged district on July 1, 1983. Sharma also described Kokrajhar as a land where people of diverse communities, cultures and linguistic backgrounds have coexisted harmoniously.
Resource person Anjalee Basumatary spoke on the historical evolution of the district and discussed various theories regarding the origin of the name "Kokrajhar". She also highlighted the contributions of social reformer Rupnath Brahma, describing his legacy as an enduring source of inspiration.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Additional District Commissioner Banti Talukdar.
Additional District Commissioners Krishan Jyoti Deka, Suprava Roy, Himadri Sekhar Bordoloi and Palash Rajkumar Ahom, along with Assistant Commissioners and other officials and staff of the district administration, attended the event.
