12-Member Team Surveys Upper Assam Flood Losses, Plans Targeted Relief

NAZIRA, August 15, 2026 — A 12-member team of Maulanas from Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha has arrived in Upper Assam to assess the needs of families affected by the devastating floods in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo districts and prepare targeted relief and rehabilitation support.

The team, associated with Emarate Shariah and North-East India Emarate Shariah, has been conducting surveys in severely affected villages to understand the losses suffered by families and identify their immediate recovery needs.

The floods that swept through parts of Upper Assam after the Dikhow River disaster left thousands of families struggling with damaged homes and the loss of food supplies, clothing, household belongings and livelihoods.

Working under the supervision of Sivasagar District Emarate Shariah and Nadwatut Tameer, with the cooperation of Nazira Amolapatty Purana Masjid Deka Jamat, the team has so far visited Chontak, Bihubar, Nepali Khuti, Shila Sako, Bamun Pukhuri, Kamal Chapori, Ligiri Pukhuri, Bartal and Nazira town.

The survey is focusing particularly on families who lost homes and essential belongings and are facing difficulties returning to normal life.

As part of the initial response, North-East India Emarate Shariah has already distributed food packets and ₹2,000 in cash to several families identified as being in urgent need.

Following the assessment, the organisations are preparing a relief and rehabilitation plan based on the requirements identified during the survey. Proposed assistance is expected to include beds, wooden cots, pillows, bedsheets, corrugated tin sheets for rebuilding damaged houses and other essential household materials.

The visiting team comprises Maulana Ahmad Hussain Qasimi Madani, Maulana Sohaib Ahmed Qasimi, Maulana Sabir Hussain Qasimi, Maulana Quddus Majhari, Maulana Rafi Ahmed Nadvi, Maulana Wajihur Rahman Majhari, Maulana Mohammad Osman Rahman, Maulana Minnatullah Majhari, Maulana Abdul Bari Rahmani, Maulana Mahtab Ali Rahmani, Maulana Fariduddin Chowdhury and Maulana Naimuddin Chowdhury.

The team is staying at Nazira Purana Masjid while continuing its assessment of flood-hit communities.

Rather than distributing a uniform relief package, the survey-based approach aims to identify the specific needs of the most vulnerable families before assistance is provided. Families across communities have received support during the initial phase, while a larger rehabilitation response is being planned on the basis of the ongoing assessment.
