Fresh safety concerns over Maharaj Prithu Flyover after fatal accident
Noonmati resident dies after two-wheeler collision on rain-soaked flyover; citizens demand immediate safety audit, repairs and temporary closure until hazards are addressed.
GUWAHATI, July 5, 2026 — A fatal road accident on the newly inaugurated Maharaj Prithu Flyover has sparked fresh concerns over its safety, with residents and commuters demanding immediate repairs and a comprehensive safety audit after repeated reports of vehicles skidding during rainfall.
The latest accident claimed the life of Parimal Medhi, a resident of Noonmati, who died following a collision between his motorcycle and a scooter on the flyover late on June 29. The impact of the collision proved fatal.
According to local residents, the flyover had become extremely slippery due to rain, raising questions about the quality of its road surface. They alleged that several vehicles have skidded on the flyover since its inauguration, particularly during wet weather, making it hazardous for motorists.
The incident has triggered widespread public outrage, with many questioning how a newly constructed flyover could develop such serious safety issues within months of its opening.
Residents also alleged that emergency response to the accident was delayed. They claimed that police and ambulance services reached the spot only after a considerable lapse of time, adding that quicker medical assistance might have improved the victim's chances of survival. These claims could not be independently verified.
Another issue highlighted by commuters is the ongoing night-time finishing and repair work on the flyover. According to locals, one lane often remains closed, forcing traffic from both directions to use a single carriageway, which they say increases the risk of accidents, especially during rain.
The accident has also reignited criticism on social media. Several citizens have questioned the engineering quality and execution of the project, asking whether adequate safety standards were maintained before the flyover was opened to the public.
"We cannot wait for another life to be lost before corrective measures are taken," said a local resident, echoing calls for immediate intervention.
Residents and commuters have demanded that the authorities either temporarily close the flyover or undertake urgent repairs to improve road grip and drainage. They have also called for an independent technical inspection, installation of anti-skid surfacing where required, improved traffic management during repair works and enhanced safety measures for motorists.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident.
