A protest demonstration was organised at Kajalgaon in Chirang district on Tuesday against the recent gang rape of a minor tribal girl in the district.

The protest was led by the Chirang District Committee of the All Assam Tribal Sangha, with support from various organisations, including the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), ABWWF, ARSU, AASU, ABMSU, BSS, and AATYL. Students from various educational institutions and members of the supporting organisations participated in the dharna, holding placards.

The protesters demanded stringent punishment for the accused and justice for the victim, calling for capital punishment for those found guilty under the provisions of the POCSO Act, 2012.

The organisations also demanded adequate compensation for the victim and her family, an end to atrocities against girl students, and better safety and security for students and the general public. They further called for strict enforcement of law and order to curb anti-social and illegal activities in the region.

Police said the minor tribal girl was allegedly gang-raped by three accused, identified as Nasirul Sheikh (20) of Bartalowa, Chirang; Harunul Hasan (29) of Barpathar, Bongaigaon; and Pir Mohammad (25) of Agomani, Dhubri district.

According to police, one of the accused, Nasirul Sheikh, allegedly befriended the Class X student under a false identity and later invited her to meet him. He allegedly took her to a room in Bartalowa, where he and his two associates allegedly assaulted her.

The accused also allegedly recorded the incident and circulated the video on social media.

Police have arrested all three accused.
