Over 50 people have been injured when police sprang upon them for staging demonstration near a function in Sivasagar district attended by chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday.
The incident took place in the morning when hundreds of tea garden workers in Dipling near Sonari staged dharna alleging a number of anomalies by the management.
They further alleged government apathy towards them when the chief minister himself was laying the foundation stone of a project.
Despite repeated appeal, the workers refused to call off the dharna. Then security forces resorted to lathicharge to disperse them from the place.
The injured have been rushed to the hospital.
Various parties and organizations have vehemently condemned the incident and blamed it all on the government for lack of humane approach in the police force.
