Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

BSF-BDR talk border issues

3 NDFB rebels arrested in city

Police have arrested three hardcore NDFB caders and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunitions during an operation in the city's Beltola area on Monday. According to information, acting on a tip off, conducted a raid in the area in Beltola and arrested three Bodo rebels namely Mark Narzary, Ajit Bodo, Binod Basumatary. Police further recovered three pen pistols, five 5.56 pistols, 2 M-20 pistol, 13 magazines with six rounds of ammunitions from their possession. Later these rebels have been handed over to the Police station for more investigation. It is for the first time police recovered pen pistol in the city.

Indo-Bangla border: AASU asks Dr Barman to quit

Assam’s powerful student body All Assam Students Union has demanded Assam Accord implementation minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman’s resignation for his failure to keep his words in terms of the sealing of the porous Indo-Bangla border. One killed by elephant at Kaziranga National Park

One person was killed and another seriously injured by a wild elephant near Kaziranga National Park,official sources said to assamtimes.Buda Ganju, a resident of Dagaon which was seriously injured,said that the elephant tore down a treehouse where Tulsi Gogoi,the person was killed was sitting and trampled him to death after he fell from the tree.Buda Ganju, is undergoing treatment at the Golaghat civil hospital.The park authorities have paid Rs 5,000 ex gratia to Gogoi's next of kin. Mushroom consumption: 7 died, 9 injured in Sivasagar

Four people of a same family died in Sivasagar district when they consumed mushroom on Saturday. According to information, the incident took place at Jiamari Palengi gaon in Demow near Rajmai. They fell ill on Thursday last as soon as they consumed mushroom with brinjal, beans and potato with rice. They were rushed to hospital. On Saturday four people of the same family died at the hospital. They were Manik Gogoi, Hunmai Gogoi, Monju Gogoi and Sunmai Gogoi. Lachit Bordoloi booked under NSA

Peace broker and MASS leader Lachit Bordoloi has been arrested under the National Security Act on Sunday accusing him of link with ULFA. Mr Bordoloi was detained in Moran in February following a set of confessional statements by ULFA cadre Manoj Tamuly. Later he was taken away by Nagaon, Rangia and Nalbari police in connection with a number of cases registered against him. Bus-Maruti head on collision near Dibrugarh town: 5 killed 2 injured

Five people died three others have been injured at a tragic accident at Dibrugarh district's Kutuha area on Sunday morning.According to information, the accident took place in Kutuha near Barbaruah when a Maturi Van bearing No AS506-F-3086 carrying eight people on its way to Moranhat had a head on collision with a Dibrugarh bound bus No AS-01 Q 2225.These five people died on the spot.The two injured people have been rushed to the Assam Medical College Hospital, Dibrugarh.The people left dead are Jesmine Begum, Priyara Khatun, Jahanara Begum, Julu begum and the driver Washim Hasan.

Storms hits Assam: 2 women dead in Roha, Mangaldoi

A two hour long powerful storm on Saturday midnight has left lakhs of houses ravaged in central and upper Assam district. According to information, a women died in Roha in Nagaon district when her house collapsed in the storm. Another woman also died in a similar incidents in Mangaldoi. Teachers to go for railway highway blockade on April 2

Hundreds of teachers working with the of the state's non provincialised schools will block the National Highway and railway April 2 saying the government has yet to respond to their agitation.Addressing a press conference on Friday in the city, the united body of the teachers of these schools said altogether 16,153 non provincialised schools have been striking for government steps to provincialsation.They said the decision to this effect had been taken after the failure of the Thursday's Assembly gherao where many teachers were prevented from arriving Dispur. That's why they are going to block the National Highway and railway.
