Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Assam govt to set up vigilance commission

Bharat bandh impact partial in Assam

Normal life in Assam is partially affected following the 12 hour countrywide Bharat bandh which has began in the morning. Barring government buses others are remaining off from the state. A section of business establishments is opening in some places. There is no report of any untoward incident so far. All government, semi government and private offices are functioning with skeletion staff. Flight and train services are normal. Police have arrested hundreds of bandh supporters during this period. They include BJP president Ranjit Dutta and BJP leader in Dibrugarh Prasanta Phukan.

NIA to produce Niranjan in court

The National Investigation Agency is all set to produce DHD-J military chief Niranjan Hojai before a special court in Guwahati on Monday. A team of NIA has already arrived in Guwahati along with Hojai 2 days after the dreaded Dimasa insurgent leader was arrested from an airport in Nepal. NIA has been seeking him to probe the terror funding case in Dima Hasao district. On the other hand, the rebel outfit which came over ground threatened to resume arms struggle if Niranjan Hojai and chairman Jewel Garlora are not released. On Sunday, some of the cadres set on fire their designated camp at Jatinga even as an indefinite bandh disrupts normal life in the hills district.

Food poisoning: over 100 taken ill after consuming botched gram in sivasagar

At least 150 people have been taken ill after they had consumed botched gram and pulse in Sivasagar district on Sunday. The incident took place near Sonari in Charaideo subdivision a day after they consumed prasad of gram and pulse served at a religious function. They were rushed to the hospital as soon as they started vomitting and complained of severe stomach pain. The seriously ailing persons have been referred to the Sivasagar civil hospital while others are undergoing treatment at the Nazira subdivisional hospital.

DHD-J designated camp set on fire

A string of sporadic incidents have marked the Dima Hasao district bandh that begun on Sunday. Called by the DHD(J), the indefinite bandh is total. But only to be marked by a string of sporadic incident. A group of DHD-J cadres set on fire a designated camp at Jatinga on Sunday. The Dimasa rebel called for the bandh demanding release of Jewel Garlosa and Niranjan Hojai.

30 injured in roadmishap near Guwahati

Atleast 3 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into a deep gorge on Saturday night near Guwahati. According to information, the mishap took place at around 11.30 night when the Jorhat bound bus fell into a deep ditch in Jorabat. The injured passengers have been rushed to the hospital.

No direct control over autonomous bodies: Gogoi

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi says his government has no control over the autonomous bodies set up under the Sixth Schedule. Talking to reporters in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi questioned the Opposition parties' allegations of his involvement in the Rs 1,000 crore scam in Dima Hasao district. Gogoi said if the opposition parties comes out with evidence he would quit the office.

Gogoi hints at facilities for jailed ULFA leaders

The Assam government will provide all assistance to the jailed ULFA leaders if they come forward for talks. Announcing this Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Saturday that these facilities would be within provisions of law to enable them to take a formal decision. Gogoi said the government has received a letter so far from an ULFA leader showing interest to hold talk. "But we Paresh Barua to come to the table," said the Chief Minister.

NIA arrests DHD(J) chief in Nepal

The National Investigation Agency has at last captured the elusive DHD(J) chief Niranjan Hojai in Nepal. According to information, the dreaded terrorist has been captured in Nepal on Friday midnight. The country's premier investigation agency has ben seeking him in connection with the nefarious terror funding cases in Dima Hasao district of Assam. Hojai, the most wanted Dimasa rebel outfit leader was captured at the Kathmandu Airport as soon as he landed from Singapore.
