Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Tiger terror in Guwahati; leopard captured

Four persons have been injured when a fully grown leopard attacked them after storming into a residential area in Guwahati on Saturday. The leopard ran into a house on the Nabagraha Road in Silphukhuri area at around 12-30 in the afternoon. Immediately after it the leopard attacked four persons one after another. Road accident in Mangaldoi: 6 policemen killed

Six policemen were killed in a tragic accident in Mongoldoi on Saturday. The accident took place at around 6 in the morning when their vehicle collided head on with a bus on National Highway 52. According to information, the policemen were travelling from Barpeta towards Dalgaon when the accident took place at Punia, killing all of them on the spot. The deceased were identified sub-inspector Surendra Nath Bora, constables Lwmsraw Boro, Arun Kumar Singh, Gunindra Bora, Sobin Rabha and driver Moinul Haque.

ULFA appreciates Tarun Gogoi’s son

The United Liberation Front of Asom on Friday has backed Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav Gogoi for his efforts to give Assam a fresh lease of life on vital fronts. In an email statement to media, the outfit’s Publicity manager Arunodoy Dohotiya thanked the efforts of the chief minister’s son to open the flood gate of foreign experts to carry out seminars in the state’s educational institutes. Dohotiya called it an effort to develop Assam economy. He said that the state no dearth of potential to develop on all fronts.

Anil Majumdar case to be handed over to CBI

The Assam government is set to handover the sensational Anil Mazumdar murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation three years after the gruesome incident rocked the state. According to information, the Criminal Investigation department probing the case has been failing to make any breakthrough and that’s why, the case is likely to be handed over to the investigation agency. Majumdar, the journalist who owned a vernacular daily in Guwahati was shot dead by unidentified gunmen just in front of his residence three years back.

ULFA strike likely in R-Day run up

Bridge collapses in Dhemaji: 29 injured

At least 30 workers sustained injury when the bridge they were building collapsed in Dhemaji district on Friday. The incident took place at around three in the afternoon where eleven of the seriously injured workers were shifted to the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh. The bridge linking Dhemaji with Dibrugarh collapsed when around 120 workers were engaged in construction work by Riterning Engineering. Altogether 11 workers have been rushed to the Assam medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh while others were shifted to Dhemaji and Chilapathar hospitals. Local residents blamed the construction company for sub standard work.

Gogoi pins hopes on big ticket investment in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday said that normalcy was back to Assam. Addressing the Seventh North East Business Summit in New Delhi, the Assam Chief Minister said that his state government has taken the lead in restoring peace in the region. NE situation normal:Chidambaram

Union home minister P Chidambaram on Friday said that normalcy is back to Assam and other northeastern states. Inaugurating the North East Business Summit in Delhi on Friday he said that the entire region was free from conflict. He said the insurgent outfits, mostly, have come forward for talks. Talks fail to break dam deadlock

A brainstorming round of talks between govenment has failed to break the deadlock over the NHPC-owned big dams in Gerukamukh. Talking to KMSS, AASU, AJYCP and AJYCP delegations in Dispur on Thursday the group of ministers refused to force Arunachal Pradesh to stop construction. The government would hold talks with the experts and prominent citizens on January 14. The protestors would decide the next course of action only after that.
