Young activists honoured

Young writer and social activist Syed Miraz Ahmed, was honored the Rotary Young Achiever Award 2013 on Saturday for his work on environment and sustainability activisim. Miraz is pioneering the use of technology and media to promote Citizen Journalism & New Media in North East India.

With an overarching focus on environment and climate change awareness primarily among the youth he involved in a strategic, constructive pilot affiliate intervention programme with Nokia India and the Television for the Environment, in bridgeing the informational gaps that exist in the urban climes among school, college and university students under the programme ‘Community Screenings for Environment Awareness’. Miraz has been associated with several free media groups and developmnet  and Human Rights Organisation while working towards North East independent media movement.

The award ceremony at ITA Centre, Guwahati celebrated the spirit of the New Generation, as its core theme. This Rotary International’s initiative had thirty participating youth sharing their vision on ‘Youth Speak: How I want my India to be in 2025.’The session was judged by Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika, Secy, Tourism and Dr. Tondra Borbora, Lecturer. Present in the programme as Chief Guest was the General Manager of the State Bank of India (Local Head Office), Mahendra Aditya Sahu.

To inspire the youth with their experiences were the Tarun Saikia-Manish Deka duo (who scaled the Mount Everest), Rituraj Phukan (General Secretary, Nature's Green Guard who visited the Antartica to gain firsthand knowledge of the vagaries of Climate Change) and the brigade of Young Achievers representing various fields who were awarded for their contribution to the society through their vocations. They are: Debashish Dutta (Ace Chess Player), Queen Hazarika (Singer, Actor), Mayank Taparia (Ideator, Education Specialist, Social Activist), Mallika Buragohain (Fashion Photographer), Ranjan Engti (Pop Artist, Ideator, Social Activist), Dulu Bora (Enviromental Conservationist), DJ Pulse (Music-maker, Instructor), Kamal. K.Kakati (High-fashion Journalist based in Mumbai), Rupam Bhuyan (Lead Vocalist) and Dilip Sarmah (Sculptor, Garden Architect). The event also featured several rounds of cultural extravaganza on the theme: Empowering the New Generation that enthralled the audience present.

Cultural programme by Srishti

Freshers Social and 8th Annual Cultural Meet of Delhi-based cultural organisation Shrishti  was  held on October 2 at Vijay Nagar, Delhi. EMFA meeting to discuss news channel closure notice

The Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has expressed serious concern at the sudden closure notice of Prime News by its management leaving more than 150 employees including journalists jobless. The employees of the Guwahati based private satellite news channel inform that the concerned officials of the management have declared about its closure from today. To discuss about the latest situation and decide necessary actions in this regard, the EMFA has called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday (3 Oct) at 11 am in Guwahati Press Club. The EMFA requests the presence of every conscious television channel employee in the meeting.

APJA condemns police atrocities on photojournalists on duty

The Assam Photo Journalist Association (APJA) has condemned the police lathi-charge on a number of photojournalists, who were on duty to cover the KMSS demonstration at Dispur last gate today. The police personnel resorted to lathi-charge on the agitating KMSS activists and they did not also spare the photojournalists on the location.The APJA has warned the police administration o keep away their personnel from attacking the journalists in feature. The police attacked the media persons so that they can evade the coverage of their barbaric actions on the agitators. Koch Media Fellowship 2013

Centre for Koch Rajbanshi Studies and Development (CKRSD) invites print media journalists of dailies to apply for the Koch Media fellowship 2013 on “Koch Rajbanshi: Past and Present in Assam and North Bengal”. The total number of fellowship is 3 (three). Mission Rabies to vaccinate 50000 dogs across India

Mission Rabies is going to to vaccinate 5000 dogs in Guwahati this September (Between 15th to 28th September 2013). Film on Mayong selected for US film festival
