181 helpline for women

Dispur is prepared to operationalise 181 helpline exclusively for women in distress.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi writes to Chief Secretary PP Verma asking him to instruct the state Home and Political Department to work out an action plan to operationalise the 181 helpline facility for women as it was in other states like Delhi.

Gogoi directed that the helpline be operationalised in consultation with the Assam Police, Health and Family Welfare, Assam State Disaster Management Authority and other line departments. Contest polls: Gogoi to ULFA(I)

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that he would welcome Paresh Baruah if ULFA((I) comes forward to contest in the polls.Talking to reporters on Wednesday in Dispur, Gogoi said that he would be happy if the outfit along with the Akhil Gogoi—led KMSS and Aam Admi Party join the election process.   

Youths crushed to death

Mooshahary to fight from Kokrajhar

After months of will-he-won’t-he, Ranjeet Sekhar Mooshahary finally announced that he would contest the upcoming Lok Sabbha polls.Talking to reporters in Kokrajhar on Tuesday, the former Meghalaya Governor gave hint of contesting the polls as an independent candidate.His announcement bears significance a few days after he visited the Aam Admi Party office in Guwahati where he was apprised of the party’s position and procedures.

Cong strategy for RS polls

Rajya Sabha polls are slated for February 7. The ruling party is believed to have chalked out a slew of strategies to win the three Rajya Sabha seats.Party leaders are in touch with AIUDF and independent legislators to ensure win in all the three seats.The party still falls short of 8 votes to occupy the three seats which are set to be vacant following the expiry of the terms for Bhubneswar kalita from Congress, Biswajeet Daimary from BPF along with Birendra Prasad Baishya from AGP.

Goswami’s death shrouded in mystery

Dr Bhagawan Goswami’s death seems to have shrouded in mystery a day after the lifeless professor of the Cotton College was recovered on the Brahmaputra in Panbazar on Monday.After the post mortem, his family members have called it a cold blooded murder citing a number of clues. His family members claimed to have seen an injury mark on the forehead of the body along with some mysterious position which suggested it a case of murder..His wife demanded a high level probe to ascertain the truth behind the mysterious death of Dr Goswami. Amid Bhugali bihu festivity at least eight persons were killed and 10 others have been injured in three different road mishaps on Tuesday wee hours.In a shocking mishap, four policemen were killed when the Scorpio vehicle carrying them collided head with a truck in Laluk in the wee hours. RS polls on February 7

The Election Commission is set to hold polls for three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam on February 7.According to information available with assamtimes, the country’s poll panel is expected to issue poll notification on January 21 for the three seats. The results are expected on the voting day.Notably, the term for three sitting Rajya Sabha members will end in March this year. They are Bhubneswar Kalita from Congress, Birendra Prasad Baishya from Asom Gana Parishad and Biswajeet Daimary from Bodoland Peoples’ Front.
