Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Workers kidnapped in Moriani

Despite strict vigil, Naga miscreants continue to unleash terror in Moriani along the Assam-Nagaland interstate-border.                    Suspected NSCN-K militants kidnapped four workers from  their workplace on Wednesday morning.           The incident took place at Rankham where armed militants took away the workers at gunpoint.          Search operation is in progress.

Escalating tension in Chirang

Tension is escalating in Chirang after two school goers were shot dead by police during a counter insurgency operation.         The incident took place at Runikhata in the morning when police opened fire at a group of students on their way to the school during an operation.          Two students namely Jiri Narzary and Pranjit Narzary died on the spot while three others sustained injury who were shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.          Then the irate mob rushed to the Runikhata police station and set it on fire. Even the police vehicles were not spared.

JFA condemns killing of Chhattisgarh journalist Sai Reddy

Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has expressed shock at the killing of Chhattisgarh based journalist Sai Reddy, who according to media report, was killed by Maoist activist on Friday last. Reddy (51), a native of Basaguda village in Naxalite-hit Bijapur district of south Chhattisgarh, used to write for Deshbandhu newspaper of the State. Media reports say that Reddy was attacked by a group of Maoists with sharp weapons in broad daylight on December 6. Reddy was returning from Basaguda weekly market on that day, when he was allegedly attacked by the Maoist activists and he later succumbed to his injuries while on the way to the Bijapur hospital. Another tripartite talks for peace

Decks are clear for Upper House. The strength of the council of ministers is also set to be increased soon. An emergency cabinet meeting held at the residence of prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh appoved the proposal for the Upper House which has been pending for the last couple of months.

Steps to curb violence

A brain storming meet  of police heads from 14 districts chalked out a slew of strategies to counter the growing militant activities in these districts.  Presiding over the meeting at Assam police Headquarters on Thursday, DGP JN Chaudhury asked the SPs and IGs and DIGs to sternly deal with the fanning militant forces in the state.       The state of late, has witnessed an orgy of militanta activities in the form of murder, abduction and extortion forcing the centre to keep Dispur on alert.

Gogoi gets tougher

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said the the government wont tolerate any crime against women. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Wednesday, Gogoi said that a special task force would deal with the case. According to the chief minister, post mortem report suggests no rape. Escalating protest in Lakhimpur

Five days have passed since a woman was brutally attacked and dumped on the roadside in Lakhimpur who succumbed injuries at the GMCH.
