Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

EC team on stock taking visit

Change in Gandhi visit schedule

Rahul Gandhi has made some changes in his visit to Assam slated for Tuesday.The AICC vice president is scheduled to land at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at 10-30 in the morning on Tuesday.After a brief halt, Gandhi will leave for Diphu where he is all set to attend a programme. The top Congress leader is expected to be back in Guwahati at 12.30 in the afternoon.Then he is scheduled to address the rally on youth and women empowerment at Veterinary College Playground.At 3 in the afternoon, Gandhi will interact with intellectuals and prominent citizens at Sarusajai Indoor Stadium. Resurfacing tension in Borgang

Borgang area in Sonitpur district erupts in tension again a day after police recovered four decomposed bodies of local villagers who were believed to have been killed by miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh.Local residents in large number blocked the National Highway by burning tyres alleging failure to arrest the Chauldhuwa culprits who killed at least 16 local villagers in January.    

Another shocking rape

Yet another girl from Assam was raped in New Delhi. The shocking incident took place in Mohipalpur when the victim was taking shelter near her boy friend.According to allegations, the boy friend along with two other associates repeatedly raped her on February 21.Police have already arrested the trio after the victim lodged complaint with the Basant Kunj police station. Investigation is going on.

Land pattas tomorrow

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduled to distribute land pattas to 500 families on Monday.Officials told Assam Times that Gogoi will hand over the land pattas at a function at Sankardev Kalakhetra in lieu of Rabindra Bhawan.The change in the venue was made after KMSS threaten to disturb Rahul Gandhi’s rally on Tuesday.

Golf meet gets underway

No end to hawker impasse

A committee of citizens set up to resolve the hawker-agent conflict in Guwahati failed to resolve the crisis on Saturday.Presided over by veteran journalist DN Chakravartty, the meeting failed to pull the agents who have been denying to talk to the hawkers again a day after they called the agitation an illegal.
