Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

The wife of BJP leader Chandra Mohan Patowary will succeed M A Sikandar who retired in August last year. Flood situation remains grim on Thursday following incessant rains that lashed Arunachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours. The water levels of the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries started surging to bring brimful misery for more than 70,000 people.  The affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur where flood waters have been wreaked havoc in 155 villages. Sonitpur district alone have more than 50,000 displaced people. This is followed by Lakhimpur where more than 15,000 people have been reeling under flood waters.  Seven relief camps are operating in Sonitpur to accommodate 7,712 people.
In yet another setback for KPLT, the chief of the Karbi militant outfit bade farewell to arms before the authority in Diphu on Thursday.He is none other than Sarang Kiling  who surrendered before Diphu police with his AK-56 rifle much to the major relief for the security forces.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Aanmilani activists staged a dharna in Guwahati raising a slew of demands on Thursday.Protesters thronged at Dighalipukhuri in the morning demanding replacement of APSC chairman Rakesh Paul and immediate measures to contain Japanese encephalitis.Talking to Assam Times the protestors said that despite repeated promise Governor PB Acharya has been keeping silence to act against Paul who allegedly made money in the selection of candidates in the civil service examinations.They said that they are prepared to launch a statewide agitation if the authorities refuse to read their demands.

Normal life comes to a grinding halt in Tinsukia district on Thursday following the 12 hour bandh in protest against the incident at Bijuliban where ULFA men shot dead a businessman and his daughter on Tuesday night.Vehicles are off from the roads. Shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices are remaining closed under the impact of the bandh called by the Bhujpuri students union.      Security forces are patrolling on the streets to avert any untoward incident in the district during the bandh hours.
   Forest minister Etwa Munda termed the Bijuliban incident an unfortunate one. But in the same breath he said that the incident does not suggest law and order break down in the state.  Munda who has been camping in the district is visiting the Bijuliban village on Thursday where ULFA men gunned down local trader Nandalal Shah along with his daughter.
