Along with the other 17 districts of the state first phase panchayat poll were held peacefully in the Sivasager district on the last 31st December 2007. Although 6 communities alliance of Tai Ahom, Tea Tribes, Kooch–Rajbangshi Student Unions called 36 hours bandh from 30th December to the 5 p.m or 31st December 2007, large numbers of people casted their vote in tight security.
Interestingly in Sivasager District keen relatives of the AATASU, ATTSA were also crusted their votes.

Veteran Congress leader in Nazira Tonkeshwar Saikia breath his last at his own residence of Nazira Simaluguri on Thursday. He was 81 and survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. Saikia, the elder brother of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia died of prolonged illness. Many political leaders, organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death.
