Tricolor hoisted at press club

Defying the diktat of separatist militants in northeast India, the media fraternity of the city has celebrated the 64th Republic Day of India at Guwahati Press Club. Following the tradition, the media persons and other patriotic citizens had assembled in the campus of the pioneer press club of the region in the morning today and hoisted the national flag. Social worker and a former legislator of Assam, Ajay Dutta unfurled the tricolor in presence of the media persons and paid his heartfelt tributes to the martyrs of India’s Freedom movement.

In his brief speech, Dutta remembered the contribution of thousands of martyrs for their sacrifices which finally brought the freedom to India. He paid his tribute s to all martyrs and expressed dismay that ‘we are yet to identify many martyrs and their families living in different parts of the country’.

“The contribution of each and every freedom fighter of our liberation movement against the British colonial power should be recognized and documented,” added Dutta.

Earlier senior journalist Hiten Mahanta briefed the gathering about the importance of Republic Day and also mentioned about the initiative taken by a section of journalists and patriotic citizens who had come out to defy the militants’ call to boycott the celebrations of both the Republic and Independence Day.

Later the participants including journalists Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria, DN Singh, Pranabjit Doley, Pramod Kalita with Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Jaharlal Saha etc also took out a procession on the streets chanting patriotic slogans.
