Chavang Kut celebrated in Dima Hasao

The people, belonging to the Kuki community celebrated the ‘CHAVANG KUT’ here in Dima Hasao with traditional fervor and grandeur on Thursday ( 1st November) in several villages inhabited by the Kuki people.
The Chavang Kut is the major festival of the CHIN-KUKI community all over the world. This festival is celebrated specially in Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Chin state in Myanmar, Delhi and in Shillong etc.


The 24rth Chavang Kut Cum of Khongsai Youth Club Silver Jubilee organized by the Chavang Kut cum Silver Jubilee Committee celebrated at Khongsai viallge of Haflong on Thursday (1st November) in presence of thousands of people. This function was attended by Sri Madhuram Joishi, Deputy Chairman, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council as the chief guest while Upa Lenjakham Changsan, AEE, DHAC, Sri Tusar Deb, MAC and Sri Vinay Rajan, Second in command of Assam Rifle as the guest of honour.


At the out set one minute silence was observed to pay respect to the departed souls, who have left for their heavenly abode during last year and was followed by unfurling of Kut flag by the Chief Guest. This was followed by felicitation of guests with traditional ‘shawls’ as the token love. The chief Guest unveiled the memory stone erected to mark the day of Silver Jubilee of Khongsai Youth Club amidst huge gatherings.


Cultural troops of different communities also performed their traditional dance on the occasion of ‘Chavang Kut’, which kept the audience spell bound.


Earlier, K. Changsan, Gaon Bura of Khongsai in his welcome speech appreciated the guests as well as the organisers for their endeavor for organizing such fabulous programme. All the speakers stressed on the importance of preserving culture and traditions of each tribe and communities through such traditional festivals and rituals.


This festival is celebrated after most of the harvest is over. The villagers, the show their gratitude to the Lord, who permits them strength and long life and all the good things to them, they sing and dance praising the Lord. In this festival, folk songs are sung with traditional dances. During the observance of the festival people try to show their expertise in playing Goshem, Selki, Phit, Dahpi, the traditional musical instruments. With the urbanization, they now use to organize not only the traditional items but also the fashion show competition like Mr. and Miss Kut. Apart from this, they also organize traditional games and sports. Though the advent of modernization has caste impacts on traditional customs in some urban areas, but in villages, these traditional things are still in practice with some modification.


During the festival traditional dances like SAGOL PHEIKHAI, SELPANG LAM, LOMLAM, JANCHA LAM,VACOL LAM, PHEIPHIT LAM, SALU LAM, GAL LAM, SUHTA LAM, MOLKAng LAM, (stick dance) KHUL LAM were performed with the tune of musical instruments like – Gosem, Sumkon, Pheiphit, khong, Dahpi, Dahbu, selki, lhemlhei, theile etc. Though the Cavang Kut is being considered to be the major festival,other festivals like Chapphou Kut, Mim kut and lholhum kut are also there to be mentioned.

Grenade recovered at Haflong

Police recovered a Chinese grenade from Essar Petrol Pump here at Haflong this morning which was kept near oil lifting machine. Mentioned may be made here that the Essar pump is belonged to Niramal Langthasa, youngest son of the Local MLA Sri G. C. Langthasa. This pump is situated adjacent to the residence of the MLA. When the entire state is getting ready for the ensuing Assembly election, here in Dima Hasao, the lone 16-Haflong (ST) constituency, no enthusiasm was observed till the date. Because—Lone constituency, more over the people are interested in Autonomous Council and above all the ruling Congress (I) last time denied the ministry for the lone MLA of Dima Hasao. People said only one MLA out of 126 MLAs in the state cannot raise the voice of the people. This way, the existing MLA was helpless to provide benefit to the people of the district. Rail Blockade called off

Demanding immediate resumption of ‘Hill Queen Express’, several organizations of Maibang like Youth Council for Development, Dishru Cultural Club, J. B. Hagjer Club, Dimasa Women Society, Maibang Sports Association etc and people from Kalachand organized 100 hours Rail Blockade from 6 AM of February 25 at Maibang Railway station. Train derails near Lower Haflong

During the 2nd Day of the 100 hours NCHills Bandh suspected bandh supporters remove fish plate of the railway track near Lower Haflong Rly Station at about 2.50 PM resulting to the derailment of down goods train bound for Badarpur with no injury to any person. Railway personals and police rush to the spot to restore the communication. It is to be mentioned here that the railway authority had earlier suspended all the passenger trains upto January 27 as precautionary measure but running of goods train was on. 100 hours NCHills Bandh disrupts normal at Haflong

The NC. Hills Indigenous Students’ Forum sponsored 100 hours N. C. Hills Bandh started from 6 PM on Friday disrupted the normal life at Haflong. Due to 4th Saturday all the offices remain closed. No vehicle was seen on the road except of security. The NCHISF has been demanding immediate bifurcation of N. C. Hills into two Autonomous District with separate Autonomous Council. The Government has also constituted a task force to deal with them. Last 21st January was fixed for talk in-between task force and the IPF and NCHISF but it was deferred by January 28th. Now both the organizations are demanding immediate solution to their demand.

36 hours Dima Raji Bnadh affects normal life

The 36 hours Dima Raji Bandh starting from 5 AM today paralyzed the normal life here at Haflong. The bandh was called by Joint Action Committee Dima Raji Movement (JACDM) in protest against the government’s apathetical attitude towards the popular and genuine demand of Dima Raji. IPF submits memo to Central Home Minister

In protest against inclusion of the Demand Area of the Indigenous People's Forum in the proposed Dima Hasao Territorial Council and with the Demand for immediate creation of a separate autonomous district with separate council with its Headquarters at Haflong under Articles 244(2) and 275(1) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India for Non- Dimasa Indigenous People of N.C.
