On the occasion of Bon Mahotsav week 2012, Dhansiri Forest Division,Udalguri organized a plantation programme at the premises of Udalguri Civil Hospital on July 7 at 9 AM. While welcoming distinguished guests and people Bankim Sarma, DFO, Dhansiri Forest Division gave in details of the plantation programme in Udalguri district.He said that massive plantation of 30,000 trees inside Khalingduar Reserve Forest near Indo-Bhutan border could very much draw international attention.
Former Minister of Assam Rihon Daimari (presently MLA,Udalguri) attended the programme as the chief guest. Speaking on “Man-elephant conflict” and illegal tree felling in the district he said that failure to check illegal tree felling would pose serious threat to ecology of the district. He remarked that formation of more JFMC (Joint Forest Management Committee) even on small scale would help much. Thaneswar Malakar, Deputy Commissioner, Udalguri advised forest department to locate vacant places suitable for plantation.He said that local bodies like schools could be given responsibility for the protection and maintenance of the trees. Dr. DK Hazarika, Joint Director, Health, Udalguri; social worker Rameswar Boro also spoke on the occasion. Latter MLA Daimari, DC Malakar and other officials including leading journalists of Udalguri planted several hundred trees in the hospital campus.

In a very tragic and barbaric incident, Puspanjali Das (19)wife of Chandan Debnath of Thakuriapara village under Bhergaon sub-division in Udalguri district has been burnt down alive on Saturday noon for non-payment of marriage dowry. The incident has shocked the district. The lady was put in a sac before thrown in a fire lighted in a heap of hay. Puspanjali was married to Chandan just three months bac. Narayan Debnath, father-in-law of Puspanjali has been arrested while trying to flee but all the family members managed to flee before being caught.
