A string of group clash that leaves twelve people dead, as many as one hundred people injured has forced the authority to clamp curfew in the city on Saturday. The condition of thirty is reported to be critical.
The violence began as soon as the Advasi people in large numbers were holding a rally demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the community.
The Adivasi protesters damaged as many as 150 vehicles while these were plying in the Beltola areas. Moreover, some of them vandalized some shops and markets in the area.
The angry people in general retaliated by attack and the clash left 5 people to death.
The city police sprung into action and dispersed the Adivasi people from the protest rally site. But another group further proceeded to the Khanapara areas and then to Ganeshguri areas to stop the city buses.
The public in general got angry with these Adivasi students leaders and retaliated with attack. As many as ten Adivasi students have fallen injured. The injured people have been rushed to the hospital.
The entire Beltola area has come under curfew from 12 noon. The over all situation has yet to be quelled.

The news item is rather painful.
From what I gather from eye-witnesses and other sources, a protest rally of the Adivasi Assamese was resisted by police from proceeding towards Assam Assembly. The rally turned violent, whether by agent-provocateurs or in spontaneity that I do not yet know, resulting in damage to vehicles and other properties. Then a clash ensued between the protesters and the people of that area leaving several dead and more grievously injured.
Without doing a whodunit we may infer another schism that may lead to further diminishing of the people identifying themselves as Assamese. Some of the eyewitnesses ( of them few have lost their cars to the violence) have told me that the Adivasis may have damaged cars, other properties and carried out excesses, but in terms of deaths and bodily injuries they have taken the brunt. The riff raff that indulge in all kinds of mischief and anti-social activities in that area had a field day killing and maiming with glee.
It is painful, as a civil servant has put it succinctly, that these innocent people, naive to the deceit and sophistry of the privileged ones, have always suffered since the days of Mahabharata. .... whether as Ekalavya, whether as destitute of mega-dams, whether as refugees of Bodoland movement and now in the streets of Guwahati.
I listen to the news with forebodings.

Yesterdays incident has really shocked me. Impartial of being a tribe I wholly condemn both side for this unfortunate event.Whatever I have came to know is from the electronic media and considering that as an apparent fact I would comment tribesmen ensued the clash. But it is also true that the local resident, most of them are non adivasis, vent their ire and a long cherished hatred attitude toward adivasis in a gory and beastly way. Unfortunately the local adminstration played the role of mute spectator. The tribesmen who had been involved in vandalism invite punishment but it is not certainly the way. It will distance people from each other. The looser will be tribal community. Rather than inviting support for the cause the incident has unfotunate event. For the God's sake, if anyone is reading this please don't let this happen again.

What ever I learnt is only through the Electronic media. Its really shocking that even today we witness these barbaric acts. I believe every problem has a solution lest its a problem.
Three peope have been injured while a powerful blast rocked a vegetable market in Nalbari. The explosion took place at 6in the evening. The injure peopes have been rushed to the hospital. They are Nalini Kalita, Rabindra Sarma and Biswajit Debnath. On the other hand, two hardcore ULFA cadres died at an encounter with army at the Dibru Saikhowa sanctuary. The encounter reportedly going on and the army jawans are cordoning off the entire area.
The Union home ministry has sent a slew of instructions for the north eastern states to deal with any situation during the Republic Day celebrations in the region. These instructions ask the state governments to take extra precautionary measures in view of Republic Day boycott call by United Liberation Front of Asom and three others. With less than 24 hours left for the Republic Day, security has been beefed up across the state to ensure peace and normalcy during the day. Besides intensifying patrolling on the streets, police and para military troops have been deployed at the vital bridges, railway stations along with oil and gas installations apprehending militant strikes. The Army jawans are monitoring the situation with helicopters in the city and its adjoining areas. Mean while, the Kokrajhar police have recovered a black polythithene bag which suspected to have contained some explosive materials in front of the Loknath Brahma Hospital at around 5-50 in the morning. The Bongaigaon police have recovered some explosive materials inside a bag from a bus which was on its way to Bongaigaon from Barpeta in the morning.According to information, the bag was recovered from the bus bearing No AMB 2081 during a routine check at the Chapaguri Road at around 10-35 in the morning on Friday. The bag was taken away to a safer place. Later police said the bag contained some detonators, 200 gelatin sticks, some clothes and medicines. Despite drizzling in January Coldwave, around seventy five per cent voters exercised their franchise in the fourth and final phase of panchayat polling in Darrang district on Thursday. The polling was by and large [eaceful.Hundreds of voters were seen making long queue in front of the polling booths till the end of the voting. NABARD has planned to invest a total Rs 2224.63 crore for 2008-2009 in Assam. Addressing a seminar held on Thursday at the Assam Administrative Staff College, the banks’s chief general manager C K Gopalakrishna said of this amount, the potential assessed for agriculture is Rs 886.38 crore , Rs 441.05 crore for industries while Rs 897.19 crore is being kept for services. He said in view of the thrust on agriculture and food processing industries, a credit potential of Rs 35.23 crore has been estimated for the year. Noted economist Dr Jayanta Madhab inaugurated the seminar which was attended by several senior bank officials.
The Black Widow has killed one Amri Rupsi in Haflong on Thursday morning alleging him to be a police informer. According to information, the publicity secretary of the outfit Phaisang Dimasa came to Rupsi at around 7 in the morning and took him away to the street and shot dead from a close range saying him to be a police informer. It was too late for the police to arrive in the spot. Investigation is going on.
Amid tight security, Assam is going to the fourth and final phase of the panchayat elections in Darrang district from in the morning on Thursday. The polling is going on at 728 voting centers in the district. As many as 4,50,000 voters are voting for 3659 candidates. The voting will end at 4.00 pm. Around 70 per cent of the voters had exercised their franchise in the first phase of the polls on December 31, while around 72 per cent cast their votes in the second phase on January 4. An estimated 74 per cent of the electorate had exercised their franchise in the third phase of polling on January 9.
