In the year 2011-12, 71 maternal deaths were reported in Nagaon district. As per Annual Health Survey 2010-11, the MMR (maternal mortality ratio) is 367 per 1,00,000 live births as compared to 440 of the RRC-NE, 2009 survey. The reduction in maternal death in Nagaon is possible because of many initiatives of NRHM. Deployment of Skilled Birth Attendance trained GNM/ANM, EmoC trained Doctor, launching of 108 Services, Mamoni, JSSK and Adaroni Scheme are few of them. Particularly it is possible for increase in Antenatal care (ANC) of pregnant women. In the year 2010-11 ANC figures were only 45637 and gradually in the year 2011-12 it has gone up to 48454 .The Govt. of Assam has put extra efforts to develop healthcare infrastructure and bridge the geographical access gap by construction of new health facilities and upgradation of PHCs to 24x7 PHCs.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "A maternal death is defined as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes” .
For reducing maternal death the main goal of NRHM, department is popularizing Janani -Suraksha –Yojana (JSY) Scheme among the women through various mass media tool like street play, handbill, miking, etc since inception of the mission. As a result the Institutional deliveries in Nagaon district has also increases tremendously. In the year 2010-11 total 39336 nos of women delivered their baby in the government hospital and in the year 2011-12 the figure gone up to 44490. It is noticed that JSY has expedited the institutional delivery rate in the district and by brining expected mothers to health institutions.
As of now, nagaon has 6 First Referral Units (FRU), 1 District Hospital, 5 Community Health Centre’s (CHC), 32 MPHCs, 23 State Dispensary (SD), 5 Subsidiary Health Centre’s (SHC) and 361 Sub Centers (SC) , 1901 ASHA and 196 ASHA Supervisors, which can made a tremendous impact in increasing institutional delivery.

The carcass of a leopard died of food poisoning in Golaghat on Sunday. Local residents in Karunating Tea Estate found the leopard in a bad condition on Saturday evening and handed over it to the forest authorities.
The animal, however, died before the arrival of a team of medical personnel and forest officials. A postmortem of the carcass conducted this morning established poisoning to be the cause of death. There were no signs of any external injuries.
Additional Director with Intelligence Bureau R N Behura, who had suffered serious injuries in a road accident on April 9, died in Guwahati on Sunday morning.
Behura breathed his last at the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre where he was undergoing treatment for past six days.
He is survived by wife and a son. A 1979 batch IPS officer of the Manipur-Tripura cadre who hailed from Orissa, he had met with an accident at Sonapur near Guwahati.
The accident took place when he was on his way back to Guwahati from Numaligarh Refinery when his car collided with a truck. He had been admitted to GNRC in critical condition.

Rongali Bihu begins in Assam with drumbeats to take the people into yet another realm of joy. The bihu began on Friday with cow worship. Saturday is Bor Bihu. It heralds the Assamese new year amidst traditional pomp and gaiety.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also participated in several Bihu functions in Guwahati on Friday where he hoped that it would foster goodwill and strengthen the base of society. All programmes this year are scheduled to begin with songs of cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika, who died in November. Despite heavy presence of security forces ULFA has exploded a grenade in Tinsukia district on Thursday only to make its presence felt a week ahead of prime minister’s day long visit to Assam.
The grenade exploded at a market place in Bordumsa on in the afternoon. But it missed target and that’s why, there was no report of any casualty.
Security forces are spreading tentacle to thwart any attempt to nab the culprits. The blast assumes significance three days after it called for Assam bandh on April 20 to oppose Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit.
