Govt Closes Shutter of Cotton Mill
At the time when the state govt. is raising slogans about drastic change in the industrial sector of the state with great emphasis on establishment of Engineering Colleges, Polytechnics in every district, the irony is that on the other hand, many a time the govt. act in a contradictory manner. Boasting about a developed Assam with highest priority on industrialization the state govt’s indifference and apathy towards the cooperative sector industries is posing a serious threat to their very existence. The state govt. without making any efforts to rejuvenate the co-operative sector industries which are in dilapidated state, is determined to shut them down.
After shutting down the Baruabamungaon Cooperative Sugar Mill in Golaghat district, this time the govt. has decided to liquidate Swahid Kushal Konwar Cooperative Cotton Mill at Dabidubi in Golaghat. The Cotton Mill was established in the year 1990 at an area of 655 Bighas of land with a project cost of 15 crores. But due to loopholes in administration and due to negligence of concerned officials towards their duties, the Mill became inoperative in the month of June, 1993. All though the authorities said that due to the lack of necessary machineries and funds the Mill became inoperative but it is proved that the poor management is the root cause and it accelerated the cotton mill’s early death just after a short period of its birth.
The Mill has started its production from the month of August, 1990 with only 45% of its machinery being installed. Since inoperation of Mill in 1993 the fate of 157regular employee and 130 casual workers became uncertain. Out of 157 regular employees, 12 of them have already left for their heavenly abode. The cotton mill which was once a hub of activities and productivity now wears a deserted look and the last remain of the mill is now in a state of ruin. It has come to our notice that the state govt. has already cancelled the registration number of the mill and declared it as closed. The govt. has also initiated the process of liquidation of the mill and has offered a onetime settlement of rupees one crore ten lakh to the officers and workers of the mill. Opposing the move of liquidation the cooperative societies of the district has presented a memorandum to the state govt. through the Deputy Commissioner to review its decision on liquidation and once again declare the mill open.
