Symposium on High Performance Computing at Assam Engg College

The National Symposium on High Performance Computing was held at Assam Engineering College, Guwahati on May 5, 2012 was aimed at creating awareness on HPC and its potential benefits in academia and industry. The technical sessions by expert speakers in various engineering domains provided a perfect incubation platform for faculties, engineers and researchers to indulge in advance research using HPC.

High-performance computing (HPC) is the use of parallel processing for running computationally intensive application programs efficiently and reliably. It is considered synonymous with the term supercomputing. Research on HPC started in the late 1970s and has gained importance in recent times. At the beginning, HPC applications were limited to spheres of defence and other technologically advanced industries. But, with the demand for sophisticated technological utilization, HPC has spread its roots to other platforms of science, industry and business, in applications such as structural analysis, oil exploration, computational fluid dynamics, atmospheric sciences, etc. The recent areas of application include medicine, computational chemistry, finance, transportation, virtual reality and many others.

Expert speakers included Prof. Krishnamachar Sreenivasan, Visiting Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Guwahati, Dr. Hemen Goswami, Founder and CTO, Damyant Software Pvt. Ltd., Prof. Diganta Goswami, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Guwahati, Prathu Tiwari, consultant at HPC and BigData in Wipro Ltd., Prof. Shikhar Kr. Sarma, Department of Computer and Information Technology, Gauhati University.
