Delhi University experiences Mukoli Bihu

For the residents of Delhi who belong to Assam, celebrating the spring away from home is nothing new. But this time it was in a different fervour and flavour. Along with the different celebrations of Bihu across the capital, Pooberun, a socio-cultural initiative of north-east students of Delhi University, organized yesterday an unembellished yet joyous event here. Named as Boxonto Utxob: The Splendour of Spring, the event was an effort by Poberun to showcase and celebrate cultural richness of Assam in a pan-Indian platform, using the university as a space.

“We wanted to celebrate spring, not just Bihu, we wanted to make it an inclusive celebration of spring for all the people of Assam presently residing in Delhi by cutting across class, caste and creed based faultlines”, said a member of Pooberun. The hour-long event, held at prestigious Hindu College was devoid of unnecessary formalities and ornamentations.

The principal of Hindu College, Pradumn Kumar, inaugurated the event and spoke about the importance of the emphasis on culture of the North-eastern region for a greater bonding between the people of different parts of the country which will ultimately provide a boost in nation-building. Many other teachers from Hindu College were also present.

The special attraction was a participatory Mukoli Bihu led by a well-known Bihu troupe consisting of students of Delhi University. The enthusiastic audience participation in the Mukoli Bihu created a nostalgic ambience for everyone present there.

The presence of a sizeable number of audience and the positive response generated made the event a success. The officials of Pooberun have informed that utmost effort will be provided in successful continuation and betterment of the event in the forthcoming years. Pooberun, the initiate formed last year by a few students of Delhi University and from other parts of Delhi has successfully held a plethora of events till now including seminars, talks, film festivals and cultural events.
