The Diaspora from Assam that call the UAE home is all set to celebrate Rongali Bihu in a grand way on the 6th of April in the glitzy desert city of Dubai. The event is a formal culmination of festivities that take place in various households in the community. No wonder, it is a much awaited event for all those who yearn for the magic of Bihutolis at this time of the year.
It was the year 1999 when the UAE first witnessed Rongali Bihu celebrations in an organised way. With each passing year the celebrations have grown in scale and grandeur thanks to the tireless efforts and active participation from each and every member of the diaspora. Rehearsals for the big day are underway in many households and everyone is eager to put his/her best foot forward as it is a rare opportunity in a foreign land to showcase the cultural mosaic that is Assam.
Over the years acclaimed artistes from the Assamese music and tinsel world have graced the Bihu celebrations in the UAE and this year is no exception. Singing sensation Dikshu (Sharma) and the talented Priyanka Bharali will be the star attractions and fans here are eagerly anticipating a virtuoso performance from the duo.

Gauhati University has announced the results of the B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. Part-II examinations-2008 conducted by it on Monday evening. According to information, in the BA exam, 13,966 candidates out of a total of 27,167 were successful, with the pass percentage being 51.41. In the B.Sc. exam, 1,655 candidates out of a total of 2,494 passed, the percentage being 66.36. In the B.Com exam, 2,378 out of a total of 3,186 passed, with the pass percentage being 74.64.

The 12 hour statewide Assam bandh that disrupted normal life has ended on Monday evening. The bandh was by and large peaceful. Barring a few stray incidents, the situation was by and large peaceful. Police arrested as many as 100 AGP and CPI bandh supporters while they were picketing on the streets in Morigaon, Jagiroad, Tezpur, Jamugurihaat. Assam's overall law and order situation is improving a bit if the recent Home ministry report is to be believed.The report says there is slight decrease in the violent scenario in Assam adding that the state has registered only 152 cases till March 31, 2008 as compared to the corresponding period of the last year when the number of such incidents was 156.The report, however, has attributed it to the sustained counter insurgency operations against militant outfits.
