Farmers training on Crop Processing and Value addition at KVK, Nagaon

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Assam Agricultural University, Nagaon and Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, Regional Centre Guwahati under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI have organised a day long training programme at Nagaon on 12.12.2011. About 60 farmers (both man and women) from 7 villages of the district have attended the programme where topics related to food processing in horticultural crops were thoroughly discussed. At the beginning of the training programme, Dr Mrinal Saikia, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Nagaon has welcomed the trainees and delivered a lecture on post harvest handling and value addition of potato and other tuber crops. Dr S. Gogoi, Principal Scientist, HRS, Kahikuchi, Guwahati has spoke about post harvest technology of fruits and vegetables.


Dr T. P. Saikia, Principal Scientist, RARS, Shillongani, Nagaon has delivered a lecture on food processing as a small scale enterprise. Mrs P. Nath, SMS (Home Science) and Mrs S. Das, SMS (Horticulture) has given hands on training to the women trainees on squash and pickle making. Mr G. Barman, DDM, NABARD, Nagaon has presented a lecture on role of banks for going for entrepreneurship in food processing. Dr K. Suresh Kumar, Sr. Scientist and In-charge, IICPT, RC- Guwahati, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI, has informed the house about the role of the institute in development of food processing sector in the NE region and appealed the farmers of this district to come forward with sound projects for establishment of small scale food processing industries in their localities to improve their livelihood. At the end of the programme, feed back was received from the representative trainees and the certificate of completion was distributed among all the participating farmers. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaon has thanked the In-charge, IICPT, RC- Guwahati for choosing this KVK for such programme and thereby helping the farmers to develop their knowledge on food processing sector.

The Nagaon District cell of National Food Security Mission (NFSM) organised a “Harvesting Ceremony” on SRI (System of Rice Intensification) on Boro Rice at Salaguri village near Dhing on the 22nd June, 2010. A SHG of 10 farmers of the locality cultivated the Boro Hybrid variety Arize 6444 by SRI method in 30 bighas of land with technical support and guidance from departmental officers and scientists from KVK. Showcasing of Improved Agricultural technologies, a noble concept pioneered by the Assam Agricultural University has already started in Nagaon district with free distribution of seeds of “Ranjit” variety of rice in Raha and Phulaguri on the 29th May last.
