Seminar on Transparency and Campus Governance

The seminar had focused on topics like Right to Information Act, Transparency and Campus governance. Speaking on transparency and campus governance, Ranjan K Baruah, National Core Team Member of LYF said that transparency in the campuses is must if we have to root out corruption. Talking about the importance of transparency he said that colleges or universities publishes annual magazine with various reports which are available for the students but financial statement or the audit statement are hardly seen by any students.

“For effective and democratic campus governance it is important that educational institutions must publish their annual financial statement and it must be made available for the students and others.” He also said that we have seen college’s student union publishes their annual reports in the college magazine but it must include the financial statement of the students union and amount they spend along with audit statement of the institute. Speaking on RTI act Neelotpal Deka said that “RTI is a tool adopted by the people of India to check corruption which is a good sign for functioning of world’s largest democracy, RTI in North East India is yet to get momentum yet few people and organizations are successful to use it as a weapon against malfunctioning of the government machinery”.

Speaking on the occasion Partha Pratim Borah, President of Assam Unit of National Students Union of India had mentioned that students must take active part in the electoral process. He also added that students must make sure that their fundamental rights are integral and at the same time they carry out their fundamental duties for the betterment of the nation.
