‘Shreemoyee’ Asomiya Mahila Samiti (SAMS) on Monday, felicitated the Assamese students of Mumbai who have secured 85% and above in the 10th and 12th board examinations of the academic year 2010-11 as a gesture of encouragement, at Assam Bhawan, Vashi. The function was presided by SAMS president Bina Saikia. The students rewarded belonged to the Maharashtra Board, C.B.S.E and also ICSE. Assamese columnist and poet Neeti Baruah who is also a retired lecturer was the Chief Guest and the guest of honour was Dr. Abani Chandra Goswami, a scientist who retired as the Head of the Department of Chemistry from Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology, Assam. Both of them enlightened the gathering with their words of knowledge and wisdom. The program started with a moment of condolence for the demise of noted Assamese poet Surendra Nath Medhi, who wrote with the pen name Sourabh Kumar Chaliha. After the welcome address by the General Secretary of the Mahila Samiti Nibedita Hazarika, the show was anchored by the Joint Secretary Indrani Sharma Borpuzari who started with a famous quote of Mahatma Gandhi “A man is but a product of his thoughts, what he thinks he becomes”. The President, Bina Saikia gave an account of the various activities of the Samiti and also congratulated the students on their success. Along with the felicitation of the meritorious students with trophies and certificates, the program also had lively singing and dance performances by the members and their children. The performances included ‘Asomiya loka Geet’ and Bihu dance and a modern Assamese dance.The function ended with a few words from some of the parents.
