Panic like situation among the D-voters of Dhubri

In Dhubri district there are 14,370 nos. of D-voters, out of which 3,732 are male and 10,668 are female voters. Now, after the recent judgment passed by the Gauhati High Court on D-voters, there is almost a panic like situations among them and some strange stories are now around the corner.


There is one such story on some Sampa Sarkar, a resident of Word No.6 of Dhubri town. She told before media persons that two persons arrived at her residence a few days ago and was trying to serve a notice declaring her as a D-Voter, which she denied to receive. According to her, all of her family members had voted in the recently concluded assembly election and prior to that, they had also voted in the parliamentary election.. It is also heard that a retired Air Force Personnel, Principal of Govt. Higher School and even working headmaster of a Govt. Lower Primary School who acted as Presiding/polling officer in the last Assembly election are apprehending arrest by the police as the cases against them are referred and pending before Foreigners Tribunal. There is also allegation that D-voters of this district are facing lots of harassment either in the hands of police or by other implementing agencies.

A hardcore ULFA militant surrendered before the Additional S.P. Hitesh Roy in Dhubri police station on June 14. The police sources reveal that he is Ratul Ranjan Bhuyan alias Joydeep Roy alias John (32) and was a corporal of 709 Battalion of ULFA. The District Transport Office of Dhubri, has started a special drive stating June 1 to curb irregularities in passenger carrying vehicles. On Wednesday itself, the transport department has collected Rs.10, 600/- as fine, withheld documents of 12 nos. of vehicles, and three busses found to be unfit. Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri had sealed a godown where rice and peas were stored for the children under ICDS on May 24 on the basis of the complain made by the Anganbadi workers of the Jamadarhat block.
