Despite heightened guesswork efforts to form the next State Government in alliance opposition Political Parties AGP, AIUDF and the BJP have faced unimaginable set back against the Congress in the 2011 Assembly Elections gone by. Poll pacts amongst the opposition have all through been a matter of much concern to the media and the public in most particular.
The Tarun Gogoi led BPF Government amid issues of corruption and anti incumbency factors proved that its longevity is more than short-term as perceived by the opposition and media gossip. In a history making performance Congress won 78 of the 126 seats and wrote itself into history of sorts. Opposition parties AGP and AIUDF bagged 10 and 18 seats respectively, BJP 5 while Congress ally BPF won 12 seats, IND 2 and TMC 1.
Reacting to newsmen BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary said “We have formed the Government for the second time and this time too we will form the Government with the Congress without issues.” Commenting on the performance of the Congress Party Minister of HRD, IT & Communications Kapil Sibal said “In Assam this is again a massive decisive victory for Gogoi Ji.” Defending AGP’s fall out former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta alleged that “EVMs have been tampered upon and such a result has been possible only with tampering.” He mentioned that the AGP had clued-up the Chief Election Commission of such a possibility during the Elections.
Towards evening about 5:45 pm Tarun Gogoi in a Press Meet at Rajiv Bhavan here he expressed his heartfelt gratitude and greetings on its success to the party workers, leaders and the people of Assam. He said that it would not have been possible to win without the people’s faith and support who voted for development in the state. He said that his Government during the past two terms have been responsible for implementing a number of Development related Schemes for uplift. He thanked Youth Leader Rahul Gandhi for visiting Assam to influence its youth and extended his appreciation to former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress General Secretary in charge Dig Vijay Singh. In his speech he acknowledged the role of both the print and electronic media during the polls. Commenting on the failure of the opposition he said “They got floored due to the lack of commitment in their ideology and tendency for confusion. But nevertheless we favor a strong opposition.” He affirmed “We shall swear in and form the Government before the last day that is the 19th of May and like I said we shall maintain our ties with the BPF.” On being asked how this hattrick and history was made possible he concluded saying that it would not have been possible without the people of Assam and therefore the credit goes to the people of Assam. Meanwhile TIMES NOW in its words has termed Tarun Gogoi as the ‘UNLIKELY HERO.’
Even as the AIUDF stands second as opposition with 18 seats, its Chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal steered clear of a question about whom his party will support now. AGP on the other hand is noticeably no more a principal opposition in Assam and the BJP has reduced to a faceless party.
