Manipur police fired tear gas cells and lathi charged at the members of the JAC of Street Vendors, who were trying to take out a rally at Khwairanband Bazar at the heart of Imphal city on Friday, injuring one woman. A large number of women street vendors were gathered at Khwai Ima Keithel at 10: 30 a.m. to take out a rally against the decision of the state cabinet to shift them to Lamphel in Imphal West to carry their activities, which the street vendors claimed to be an improper place.
The police fired several rounds of tear gas cells and lathi charged to disperse them and foiled the attempt, wounding Thangjam Lakhi Devi, Thoubal Kyamgei in Thoubal district,police said. She was rushed to a nearby hospital. She was stated to be out of danger. The state cabinet took a decision in a meeting held on April 25 to shift all the street vendors at Khwairanband Bazar to Lamphel Super Market. However, they have been demanding their seat allocations at Temporary Market Sheds which were built for the vendors of three Ima markets. The three markets were inaugurated by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on November 12.
