Peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi was today arrested at Guwahati by the city police. He was arrested from the Guwahati Press club premise where he organised a press conference. The police cited that he broke the restrictions under the Representation of the people' Act. Hower he was released from the police custody. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ordered him to release. On the otherhand Akhil gogoi along with other activists staged demonstration in front of deputy commissioner office (Guwahati Metro) demanding clarification from the election Commission of India, weather he was arrested under the aforesaid act. He alleged that it is a conspiracy of the ruling congress.
August 9 remains a black day in journalism of Assam. On this day Assam has lost a journalist who dared to write against ULFA at a time when majority Assamese people sheltered and nurtured the banned out-fit.He was none other than Kamala Saikia, a veteran journalist from Dikhowmukh, a remote area of Sivasagar district. He flayed ULFA for its terroristic activities and incubation of abrupt dream. Saikia was killed by suspected ULFA on August 9, 1991 near his home. But unfortunately proper investigation is not made Saikia’s murder till today in spite of the huge demands arisen from journalists from Assam as well as rest of the country besides his family.
