International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.

The Centre on Thursday said that ULFA 'general secretary' Anup Chetia would soon be brought back from Bangladesh. The surprising move came to light when group's 'chairman' Arabinda Rajkhowa held talks with the Centre claimed on Thursday. Two poachers were killed and three others have been injured at an encounter in Kaziranga on Wednesday. The encounter took place in the Agaratali range in the wee hours. A gang of poachers started indiscriminate firing as they faced the forest guards patrolling on the spot. When the forest guards retaliated with firing, two poachers were killed on the spot. The Assam government on Tuesday increased rate of wages, holidays, hours of work and conditions of skilled and unskilled workmen employed by contractors.As per the revision the rate of wages of an unskilled workmen with ITI Certificate will be Rs 277 per day, skilled workmen other than ITI Certificate holder will be paid Rs 175 and unskilled workmen Rs 169 per day.The rate of wages has been fixed in such a manner that no skilled workman gets less than the stipulated amount for working for a maximum 8 hours a day and no unskilled workmen gets less than Rs 169 per day.In case of overtime work, the wages will be twice the ordinary rate of wages for every work in excess of 8 hours a day and 48...
Dispur is all set to ban tobacco. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the health department to table a bill in the assembly banning all kinds of tobacco products including smokeless tobacco. A legislation would be tabled in the assembly soon.Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Saram said that the government felt it necessary to ban all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products.The instruction assumes significance as oral cancer is on the rise in the state and is caused mainly due to consumption of tobacco products.
The Assam assembly began its budget session on a stormy note on Monday. Governor Janki Ballav Patnaik opened the month long session with his customary speech. Two poachers who are suspected to be involved in the recent rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park, have been arrested during a joint operation by police and forest department in Sonitpur district on Sunday.Police and forest department officials, nabbed the duo from North Bank of Brahmaputra at Bishwanath Ghat.They have been identified as Aamir Islam and Moina Das and were suspected to be involved in the recent killing of rhinos and removal of horns in the park.
