When photos speak more than thousand words

If you find it difficult to believe ‘an image speaks a thousand words’ then come to the state art gallery at Ravindra Bhavan in Guwahati. Or even if you are a fan of photography you will be mesmerized by the stunning images captured by some of the fantastic photographers of Assam.

The first photo exhibition organized by Assam Photojournalist Association (APA) which was formally inaugurated by noted artist Noni Borpujari on February 10 has received huge footfalls so far. The visitors seemed to be spelled bound by the photographs being exhibited in the event as one visitor said, “It was really fascinating and I would like to convey my sincere thanks to Assam Photojournalist Association for organizing such a beautiful event and which has offered us the grand opportunity to see such wonderful pictures.” The middle-aged businessman further said, “I would like to urge the APA to preserve those photographs in their website.”

If one photo reveals the creativity of the capturer the other makes the visitors spelled bound by the theme or the beauty. Though every images being displayed in the exhibition stands out of its own but some of them really drew the crowds closer.

One of Rituraj Konwar’s photo taken from top angle that captured the ghastly moments when a tiger bit a man’s hand and took it off to its cage a few years ago in Guwahati State Zoo received a special mention among the visitors.

While, young lens man Biju Boro’s one of the photographs that were displayed in the exhibition that shows a cowboy returning home with his herd of cows as the evening sun sets in the backdrop, keeps one wordless for moments with its sheer beauty.

Meanwhile, the president of APA Rajib Bhattacharaya, a senior photojournalist of the region expressed his happiness that people have come forward to appreciate the photographs.

“It’s definitely a good gesture and I think the young photographer would be encouraged by it. Photojournalists tell stories with their images and have to tell with timeless and objectivity. This responsibility is paramount to a photojournalist,” he said. “They have thousands of viewers and expecting to see the truth. In today’s world of digital manipulation of images, the photojournalists still tell the truth,” he further said.

Through this exhibition the APA attempts to bring forth some of the finest works of several eminent and upcoming photojournalists of Assam. Through their work, the association strives to celebrate this challenging profession and share some of their experiences. The APA also felicitated veteran photojournalist Mahendra Baruah on the inaugural day of the exhibition.
