Longchiui - yet to see the light of development.
Longchiui, a village only 3 Km away from the Umrangso, the only industrial township of Dima Hasao is yet to see the light of development. The village was established by the affected people of Kopili Hydro Electric Project as their ancestral village Sikilangso was taken by the NEEPCO way back in 1976. They were of course compensated but with a meager amount and with some long promises of development and other facilities.
The village is having 38 houses (mostly pile house) and 200 plus population. The villagers solely dependent on jhum cultivation, which provide them rice for only two months in a year. Earlier, they were having vast areas of wetland but after the establishment of NEEPCO project all of their paddy fields were submerged. The village is having a LP school, no water supply, no proper medical services.
Sri Ra Teron, 75 years old Gaon Bura of the village Longchiui, who still goes to the Jhum talking to this correspondent said the plight of people of this village were never considered by the authorities concerned for the reasons best known to them. ‘The political leaders visit the village only before the election and make some promises of development but after the election they never visit the village. Thus our plights remain unaddressed’. ‘We are living like animals not as the human; we are not having job opportunities except daily wages’. Is there any one to think for us? He asked.
Sri Sarthe Teron, a villager said ‘though our village is nearest to the Umrangso township but there is no approach road to the village, and being nearest to cement factory, the people are suffering from some diseases due to cement dust’ ‘This year, we did not get sufficient paddy as the rats have destroyed our Jhum, we cannot think of our sufferings in the days to come since we have none to rescue us from the crisis’ Teron wipes out his tears.

Police recovered China made grenade from the official residence of Sri Mayanan Kemprai, Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, this morning.
This grenade was kept in front of the garage of EM’s residence. Actually this was noticed by a servant yesterday night at about 8.30 PM but the boy out of fear did not inform the police, this morning only he informed the police who identified as a grenade.

Police recovered a Chinese grenade from Essar Petrol Pump here at Haflong this morning which was kept near oil lifting machine. Mentioned may be made here that the Essar pump is belonged to Niramal Langthasa, youngest son of the Local MLA Sri G. C. Langthasa. This pump is situated adjacent to the residence of the MLA. Later, Army defused the grenade.
When the entire state is getting ready for the ensuing Assembly election, here in Dima Hasao, the lone 16-Haflong (ST) constituency, no enthusiasm was observed till the date.
Because—Lone constituency, more over the people are interested in Autonomous Council and above all the ruling Congress (I) last time denied the ministry for the lone MLA of Dima Hasao. People said only one MLA out of 126 MLAs in the state cannot raise the voice of the people. This way, the existing MLA was helpless to provide benefit to the people of the district.

Demanding immediate resumption of ‘Hill Queen Express’, several organizations of Maibang like Youth Council for Development, Dishru Cultural Club, J. B. Hagjer Club, Dimasa Women Society, Maibang Sports Association etc and people from Kalachand organized 100 hours Rail Blockade from 6 AM of February 25 at Maibang Railway station.

During the 2nd Day of the 100 hours NCHills Bandh suspected bandh supporters remove fish plate of the railway track near Lower Haflong Rly Station at about 2.50 PM resulting to the derailment of down goods train bound for Badarpur with no injury to any person.
Railway personals and police rush to the spot to restore the communication. It is to be mentioned here that the railway authority had earlier suspended all the passenger trains upto January 27 as precautionary measure but running of goods train was on. The NC. Hills Indigenous Students’ Forum sponsored 100 hours N. C. Hills Bandh started from 6 PM on Friday disrupted the normal life at Haflong. Due to 4th Saturday all the offices remain closed. No vehicle was seen on the road except of security.
The NCHISF has been demanding immediate bifurcation of N. C. Hills into two Autonomous District with separate Autonomous Council. The Government has also constituted a task force to deal with them. Last 21st January was fixed for talk in-between task force and the IPF and NCHISF but it was deferred by January 28th. Now both the organizations are demanding immediate solution to their demand.
