Nabajit Das brings glory to Barpeta
Nabajit Das, Lecturer of Zoology of B.H. College, Howly, Barpeta recently participated in the 23rd Biennial congress of International Primatological Soceity (IPS) held from September 12-18 at Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. He attended the congress on invitation from the IPS to presented on "Status & conseravation of Bengal Slow Loris (Nycticebus Bengalensis) in the north-east India". The scholars attending the congress from across the world deeply appreciated the paper presented by Das. After being selected by International Primatological Society, he is also successfully participated in the pre-congress training programme on primate conservation, held in Kyoto University o September 7-12, Kyoto, Japan and received wide applauses.
Nabajit Das is actively associated with Guwahati based "Primate Research Centre NE India", the lone research organization on the primates in the entire North-East India. He is currently his research on the Bengal Slow Loris, the only nocturnal primate species of North-East India under the supervision of prof. P.C. Bhattacharjee, former head of the dept. of Zoology, Gauhati university.

Two ULFA 709 battalion cadres were killed in an encounter at Nasatra village under Sarthebari PS in Barpeta district yesterday at about 1 pm. One of the dead person was identified as Pingal Deka, son of Gangadhar Deka of Nasatra village and the other dead cadre was not identified till filing this report. The additional sessions Judge FTC (First Track Court), Barpeta sentenced one Pranab Nath of Howly village in Barpeta district under U/S 448/380/302 IPC imprisonment for life in connection with a murder case. According to report, on June 12, 2006, the accused entered into the house of one Ananta Roy of Bamundi village under Sarthebari, Barpeta dist and killed the son of the family with sharp weapon and had taken Rs.2000/ and some ornaments from their house. Ananta Das lodged an FIR before I/C Howly on June 13, 2006.
One person died and about 20 others injured in a bus accident at Kaljhar, near Howly in Barpeta district today at around 4 pm. A Tinsukia-bounded bus (No- AS-01-V1367) set out from Barpeta Road met with the accident at Kaljhar on No.31 National Highway near Howly. The deceased was not identified till filing this report. The injured passengers were sent to Howly PHC and Barpeta civil hospital.
The chairperson, Assam State commission for women, Mridula Sahariya visited Bajali sub-division recently to attend in a discussion meet about various legal matters, women empowerment and to bring awareness regarding pollution free environment. In this meeting a Bajali sub-division women cell was formed taking 10 members with Deepak Kr. Choudhury, SDO, (civil), Bajali as chairman and Puspanjali Das, ACS, CO, Bajali Revenue Circle as member. The mighty river Beki eroded most of the part of Jania area in Barpeta district. At present it has become a threat to the Jania xatra. About 35 houses have been collapsed. So far 50 villages and thousands of villagers have became homeless and taking shelter government reserves and on the road. The uniqueness of the selection of the Xatriyas of Barpeta Xatra is that here the representatives are selected in a election. The new committee of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Barpeta was formed recently at "BARK DIOGNOSTIC CENTRE" in a general meeting. This committee was formed with Dr. Sayed Ahmed Zadid as President, Dr. Gunajit Patowary as Vice president, Dr. Arun Kr Sarma as Hony.Secy. In this meeting Dr. Pranab Kr. Sarma, stae Hony. Normal life in entire Barpeta district paralyzed due to irregular load-shedding by the Electricity Board. Out of twenty four hours electricity is available only three to four hours a day. As the half-yearly examinations have started from today the continuous load-shedding has seriously affected the academic environment of the entire district.
Works in several offices particularly those using computers without generators have been badly affected indicating large scale backlogs during days to come. Computers and inverters at home have become only an ornamental goods as these have been lying idle for months together. Even the telephone exchanges are hit for days together.

Twenty one injured in a road accident at Sonkuchi Colony of Barpeta town today at about 7.40 am. According to report, a Dhuburi-bound highspeeded Bolero pickup FB (No-AS-15 C 0699) vehicle lost it's control and 21 labours of that vehicle were injured. To rescue the injured the 108 health service and police were informed by the gathered people. However, help reached an hour late.
