Peace through culture and diversity

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity states that “diversity is embodied in the uniqueness and plurality of the identities of the groups and societies making up humankind”. As a source of exchange, innovation and creativity, cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature. In this sense, it is the common heritage of humanity and should be recognized and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations”


The promotion of cultural diversity is also an ethical imperative, inseparable from respect for human dignity. It implies a commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms, in particular the rights of persons belonging to indigenous peoples.


In our increasingly diverse societies, it is essential to ensure harmonious interaction among people and groups with plural, varied and dynamic cultural identities as well as their willingness to live together. Policies and conscious programmes for the inclusion and participation of all citizens are guarantees of social cohesion, the vitality of civil society and peaceful coexistence. Thus cultural pluralism gives policy expression to the reality of cultural diversity. Peace through culture and diversity was the theme of Teachers day celebration at Little Flower School Manja on 5th September, 2010. The day was also observed to honour of Mother Teresa. On her death anniversary.


There were 30 cultural items like dances, skits, choreography, speeches and songs in different languages. One of the highlights of the programme was the street theatre performance by Peace Team which lasted for more than thirty minutes. The show highlighted the practice of hand poisoning known in local dialect as BAP or THENKGUR. It is a practice giving hand poison to people for personal or family fortunes resulting in death. The practice is still seen in some parts of Karbi Anglong district of Assam.


Mr.Sandeep Gupta one of the teachers of Little Flower School spoke about Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a zealous advocate of education and one of the greatest scholars and teachers of all times.


Mr.Antony Timung a recipient of the award advised the parents to keep in contact with the teachers about their children so that the best in them can be brought out. Miss.Tanusri Dutta another recipient of the award said that the life and principles of S.Radhakrsinnan as renowned teacher and scholar is a brilliant role model for the teachers and students of all times.


Another highlight of the progamme was the best teacher award to teachers of Little Flower School for their outstanding contribution as teaches. Mr.Anthony Timung and Miss.Tanusri Dutta were given the best teachers of the year award by Fr.Dominic Teron the vice-principal of Little Flower School. The award consists of cash award, memento and a certificate.

Zealous tribute to Cliff Burton

Mumbai-based thrash metal band Zealous recently released the live DVD of their tribute to legendary bass guitarist Cliff Burton. The DVD, which was released earlier this month on October 3, is being promoted all over the country, much to the delight of enthusiastic takers.
