Monalisa, Kamalesh to attend Abhiruchi Sports Day

GUWAHATI: The 24th edition of the Abhiruchi Sports Day would be celebrated throughout the State on Monday. This year, altogether 26 players will be felicitated at a special function, to be held at Rabindra Bhavan in the city.
It may be mentioned here that the birthday of Bhogeswar Baruah, the first Arjuna awardee from the State, falls on September 3. For the last 23 years, the day is being celebrated as Abhiruchi Sports Day by the sports magazine publication group Abhiruchi.

The chairman of the organizing committee, Balendra Mohan Chakraborty, today said that the central function of the day, as usual, would be held in Guwahati which would be attended by two former table tennis players, Monalisa Baruah Mehta and Kamalesh Mehta, as chief guests.

The day will begin with a mass jogging from the Chandmari fly-over.It will be followed by a dance competition at the Nehru Stadium. The felicitation function, scheduled to be held in the evening, will honour 26 sportsperson, different sports organizers and the head of several educational instituations.

The players to be felicitated on the occasion of Abhiruchi Sports Day are: Pranjal Gogoi , Jagadish Basak , Deepmala Devi (all Athletic), Oli Deka , Krishna Deka Raja , Rimi Hazarika, Abantika Deka, Hirakjyoti Neog (all Badminton), Anal Kashyap (Table Tennis), Mousumi Gogoi, Saradi Saikia (Netball),Binod Choudhury (Basketball), S Johnkids Singh, Ranjit singh, Jonali Sharma, Debajit Meiti, Rinku Kayastha (all fencing), Sanjoy Boro (Football), Jayanta Talukdar (Archery), Kalpana choudhury, Jhanabi Gogoi, Prativa Kochari, Pranamika Bora ( all boxing), Abu Nascim Ahamed (cricket) Fariha Zaman (swimming) and Surinder Bhandari (Taekwondo).
