Opportunities in Assam and Northeast go up
Its raining jobs! Well soon it is hoped that it will actually when the unemployed of the state will no longer need to go from pillar to post in search of that coveted government job. The launching of the Employment Generation Mission by chief minister Tarun Gogoi is a welcome move at a juncture when the state is flooded with the educated unemployed.
The mission aims to generate employment opportunities for 1.87 lakh people at a cost of Rs 669 crore.
Mentionably, the mission is based on a study on generation of substantial employment opportunities in Assam by noted economist Dr Jayanta Madhab. The study also suggested the proposed approach for tackling the unemployment problem. Such a move would boost the morale of the youth and inspire them to tap other employment avenues.
The Mission has started by taking up six projects as per proposals submitted by the State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation (ALPCO), Rashtriya Gramin VIkas Nidhi (RGVN), AMTRON and ASOMI. This step is expected to generate employment opportunities for thousands of people.
Dr Jayanta Madhab pointed out that the absence of skilled labour is a minus point in the state and stated that the Mission would create wage employment and self employment opportunities through its projects.
Another major development that has shown a silver lining to the unemployed educated is the collaborative effort between Gauhati University and IT major WIPRO BPO where many youths would avail the benefits of the first ever joint job Fest organized at the Gauhati University campus. Around 37 youths have already benefited from this event. Such events provide a platform to the educated to interact with corporate giants.
Another major development is the World Bank’s initiative to appraise the proposed $ 325 million Northeast Livelihoods Project by August next year. The Bank in its project information document has allegedly stated that the principal aim of the plan is to achieve an upward trend in livelihood productivity among participating community groups in various parts of the northeast. This project will go a long way and help the emergence of new markets and the growth of employment opportunities and new livelihood practices among the people of the region. It would also provide vocational training to facilitate employment generation and natural resources management above other things.
If the above projects are carried out sincerely it would greatly benefit the unemployed giving them new hope and a zeal for hard work but the question is will these lofty schemes see the light of day? That is the question
