I-Day celebrated in Udalguri district with gaiety

The 64th I-Day of India was celebrated in various places of Udalguri district in Assam with gaiety.At Udalguri SS Meenakshi Sundaram,IAS,Deputy Commissioner of the district hoisted the national flag at DCs parade groung and took the salute of Army,police NCC and schools' march paste contingents.On the occasion he offered tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.Distinguished guests like Col.Sunil Upadhaya, AP Tiwari, IPS, Superintendent of police Udalguri attended the flag hoisting ceremony.A science model competition cum exhibition was also arranged at DCs parade ground where students from various places of the district namely-Udalguri,Tangla,Kalaigaon and Khoirabari etc displayed spectacular science models.Science model of Anupam Saharia and Manoj Sarma of JNV Kalaigaon won the first prize,while Nirankush Kashyap and Sajidur Rahman of Sacred Heart school,Udalguri;Upamanyoo Das of Kalaigaon won second and third places respectively.In the science quiz Roshan Kumar Bhattarai and Upamanyoo Das's (both from Kalaigaon) team won first prize.


At Kalaigaon, Dina Moni Das,Circle Officer,Kalaigaon Revenue Circle hoisted the tricolor at Gandhi Bakori,before offering tribute to thousands of known and unknown people who had sacrificed their lives for the nation. Cultural events were also arranged on the occasion. At JNV (Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya), Kalaigaon,nonagenarian freedom fighter Pani Ram Das (95 years) hoisting the tricolor appealed people,particularly the students to study and follow Gandhi. Madhab Sarma,Principal JNV,Kalaigaon distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions. It needs mention that three distinguished persons of Kalaigaon namely-Mahendra Saikia,Karun Deka and child scientist Juriti Saharia had been awarded district excellence awards at the central I-Day programme at Udalguri.


At Tangla, DN Hazarika,Circle Officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle hoisted the national flag in presence of more than five thousand people. A record number of 21 teams,with more than 650 participants took part in march paste event. Santius Kunjur,EM,BTC; Bonjar Daimari,Deputy Speaker BTC also attended the independence day programme at Tangla where six distinguished persons headed by Ananta Bagh,were felicitated on the occasion for their service to the society.A tchuok ball match was played in the afternoon followed by cultural and drama activities in the evening.


At Sub-divisional HQ Bhergaon,SDO(civil) Debajyoti Dutta,ADC hoisted the tricolor in presence of thousands of people. Various sports and cultural events were organized on the occasion including a few dare devil activities like putting nails into own body by a local youth.

Deaths of wild elephants in Udalguri

Unnatural deaths of wild elephants in Udalguri district has posed serious threat to wild elephant population in the state. So far six wild elephants have been found dead during 2012 against deaths of two people by wild elephants in the district. The ratio is alarming considering total population of wild elephants. According to official records only 12 nos of wild elephants had been found dead during 2000 to 2007. Among them 7 were male and 5 female including 2 babies. Jumboo kills army jawan at Hatigarh

Nayak Subedar Manoj Kumar Das (35) of Hatigarh army camp has been killed by a wild elephant inside the army camp on November 8. According to information he was attacked by a wild elephant at 5.30 am while he had been performing morning duty along with other jawans. He had been rushed to Hatigarh Brigade Hospital where he breathed his last at 8 am. The killed army man belonged to Bidyapur village of Burdhwan in West Bengal.

Kumud Chandra Deka passes away

People of Kalaigaon mourn sudden demise of Kumud Chandra Deka,a police officer known for his highest degree of integration, devotion and commitment towards the people for a long period.Kumud Chandra Deka ended his illustrious life on October 30 at his residence at Rasaraj Bi- lane at Hatigaon in Guwahati. At the age of about 69, he breathed his last following a sudden cardiac arrest. He was born on May 6 of 1943. Book on Pothorughat in Library of Congress

Python rescued at Kalaigaon

A python weighing 15 Kg and 13 feet long has been rescued by tea garden workers at Kalaigaon on October 16.According to information tea garden workers of Singrimari TE noticed the python in Bholabari section near Kalaigaon town in the morning hours while working in the garden.The python was sleeping under a tea bush.Tea garden authority reported the matter to Kalaigaon police station. Journalists working for various electronic media channels of Assam and NE from Udalguri district have formed a new forum recently at Tangla on October 14. Collapsed PWD bridge poses threat

The sudden and untimely collapse of a PWD footbridge on Noa river at Kalaigaon,connecting Ward No.7 with Singrimari in the heart of Kalaigaon town has posed serious threat to people's safety. The wooden foot bridge was constructed in the year 1980. The foot bridge had been in a dilapidated stage for last five years due to sub standard work and use of cheap ordinary timber.Most of the amount sanctioned for its regular repairing had been misappropriated by contractors and PWD officials causing final collapse in the night of October 9 at 7 PM. The Udalguri district administration in co-ordination with AMTRON on behalf of Government of Assam ceremonially distributed Laptops and Anundoram Borooah Awards to 504 students of Udalguri district who had secured first division in the last HSLC examination at a function at DC's parade ground on October 1.
