Quit India Movement in Assam is a saga of patriotism of such martyrs as Kushal Konwar, whose birth centenary falls this year.
Multi National Award winner, Jahnu Barua’s films have won over 20 awards at international film festivals including Silver Leopard at Locarno. His films brought Assamese cinema and culture to the international audience.
On 13 August, 2010 - Basundhara : The earth written and directed by Hiren Bora will be screened. The film is about conflict between man-elephant in the forested area of Sundarpur, revealing the ecological disaster wrought by the loss of habitat for the elephants due to illegal trafficking of wood, an unlicensed stone quarry and uncontrolled poaching.
“Basundhara-The Earth” has won much critical acclaim. The film has had an impressive showing at the Kolkata Film Festival and the “Third Eye Asian Film Festival” in Mumbai. It was the first Assamese film to be released in 2010. It also won nine state awards.
Hiren Bora, stage actor turned film maker, story & script writer, depicts the socio-economic development issues through celluloid. It has been organised by Rini Kakati, NRI-Co-ordinator for UK.

Three peope have been injured while a powerful blast rocked a vegetable market in Nalbari. The explosion took place at 6in the evening. The injure peopes have been rushed to the hospital. The Union home ministry has sent a slew of instructions for the north eastern states to deal with any situation during the Republic Day celebrations in the region. These instructions ask the state governments to take extra precautionary measures in view of Republic Day boycott call by United Liberation Front of Asom and three others. With less than 24 hours left for the Republic Day, security has been beefed up across the state to ensure peace and normalcy during the day. Besides intensifying patrolling on the streets, police and para military troops have been deployed at the vital bridges, railway stations along with oil and gas installations apprehending militant strikes. The Bongaigaon police have recovered some explosive materials inside a bag from a bus which was on its way to Bongaigaon from Barpeta in the morning.According to information, the bag was recovered from the bus bearing No AMB 2081 during a routine check at the Chapaguri Road at around 10-35 in the morning on Friday. NABARD has planned to invest a total Rs 2224.63 crore for 2008-2009 in Assam. Addressing a seminar held on Thursday at the Assam Administrative Staff College, the banks’s chief general manager C K Gopalakrishna said of this amount, the potential assessed for agriculture is Rs 886.38 crore , Rs 441.05 crore for industries while Rs 897.19 crore is being kept for services. He said in view of the thrust on agriculture and food processing industries, a credit potential of Rs 35.23 crore has been estimated for the year. Noted economist Dr Jayanta Madhab inaugurated the seminar which was attended by several senior bank officials.

Amid tight security, Assam is going to the fourth and final phase of the panchayat elections in Darrang district from in the morning on Thursday. The polling is going on at 728 voting centers in the district. As many as 4,50,000 voters are voting for 3659 candidates. The voting will end at 4.00 pm. Around 70 per cent of the voters had exercised their franchise in the first phase of the polls on December 31, while around 72 per cent cast their votes in the second phase on January 4. An estimated 74 per cent of the electorate had exercised their franchise in the third phase of polling on January 9.
Thirty-eight ULFA cadres, including a woman cadre, laid down their arms before the army in Tamulpur in Baksa district on Thursday morning. The group was by Nayan Kakoti who surrendered before the GOC 4 Corps Lt Gen B S Jamwal at 21 Mountain Brigade Headquarters of Red Horn Division.
