Award winning Assamese films to be screened at the Nehru Centre in London


During celebration of India's 60th independence, Nehru Centre (the Cultural Wing of the High Commission of India) is going to screen Jahnu Barua's Kushal Konwar - The great martyr of Assam on 27 August, 2010. Quit India Movement in Assam is a saga of patriotism of such martyrs as Kushal Konwar, whose birth centenary falls this year.


Multi National Award winner, Jahnu Barua’s films have won over 20 awards at international film festivals including Silver Leopard at Locarno. His films brought Assamese cinema and culture to the international audience.


On 13 August, 2010 - Basundhara : The earth written and directed by Hiren Bora will be screened. The film is about conflict between man-elephant in the forested area of Sundarpur, revealing the ecological disaster wrought by the loss of habitat for the elephants due to illegal trafficking of wood, an unlicensed stone quarry and uncontrolled poaching.


“Basundhara-The Earth” has won much critical acclaim. The film has had an impressive showing at the Kolkata Film Festival and the “Third Eye Asian Film Festival” in Mumbai. It was the first Assamese film to be released in 2010. It also won nine state awards.


Hiren Bora, stage actor turned film maker, story & script writer, depicts the socio-economic development issues through celluloid. It has been organised by Rini Kakati, NRI-Co-ordinator for UK.

A major explosion was averted beside a theatre show when army recovered a powerful bomb in front of the West Goalpara College on Wednesday morning. According to information, having seen some suspicious materials inside a basket, local residents informed it to Army's No 3 Sikh Regiment who recovered it in the wee hours and took it away to a safe place. It is really a matter of shame that the culprits who are involved in the rape against two indigenous ladies in the Udalguri district are yet to be arrested. Civil Society organisations in different parts of Assam have demanded for the arrests of the culprits and provide justice to the victims. A devastating fire that broke out in Guwahati’s Machkhowa area on Sunday evening has reduced over 100 houses to ashes with properties worth lakhs of rupees burnt to black coal. The incident took place at Kolgoli area at around 6-30 in the evening. Immediate cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained. Minutes after fire broke out inside a small house, it took a devastating turn and engulfed adjacent houses. There were sounds of blasts of LPG cylinders heard in the area. Several fire tenders were rushed to the spot but by then over 100 houses had already been reduced to ashes. Over 500 people have been left homeless. Fire tenders are till working to bring the situation under control.
ULFA has lost one more cadre of its 709th battalion. According to information, hardcore cadre Tapan Roy was killed during a joint operation by army and police at Belguri in Kokrajhar district of west Assam on Friday. He was known to be from the fatal 709th battalion. An AK series rifle, a magazine and some live ammunition have also been recovered from his possession.

Three persons died and over 50 have been injured when a powerful bomb exploded at a passenger train in Diphu Railway station early in the morning on Tuesday. According to information, the blast took place at the 901 Lumding-Tinsukia UP train. The time device bomb was planted inside the Coach No 8209.
