Technology Showcasing started in Nagaon


Showcasing of Improved Agricultural technologies, a noble concept pioneered by the Assam Agricultural University has already started in Nagaon district with free distribution of seeds of “Ranjit” variety of rice in Raha and Phulaguri on the 29th May last. Under the programme 100 ha area of land in the district are selected, which are adjacent to the Highways and Roadsides where the technologies will be showcased with an objective to harvest 30 md of paddy/bigha(9.0 t/ha). All the inputs viz., seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals will be supplied to farmers free of cost. Addressing the gathering of around 150 farmers, Dr. T.P.Saikia, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK, Nagaon urged upon the farmers to adopt the improved agril. technologies developed by the University for a better and quality yield of crops. He also explained the objectives of the Technology Showcasing programme to be implemented by the Assam Agricultural University from the current Sali season. The gathering was also addressed by Dr. B. Barman, Chief Scientist of the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Shillongani. Altogether 12 quintals of “Ranjit” variety of rice were distributed to 121 farmers of Raha and Phulaguri. The meeting was also attended by Dr. H. Kalita, Principal Scientist of RARS, U. K.Deka, SMS and Jayanta Dutta, Farm manager of KVK. Agril development Officers viz., Bhabani Nath and Mukul Bharati Nath also attended the meetings at Raha and Phulaguri, respectively. The students of the final year B.Sc. (Agri) course of AAU undergoing RAWE Programme at Raha attended the meeting and cooperated with the scientists in seed distribution.


On the June 1, altogether 33 quintals of “Ranjit” seeds of rice were distributed to 50 farmers of Amtala and Milikbasti near Hojai who are participating in the programme. On this occasion a meeting was also organized in the premises of Sub-divisional Agril Office, Hojai which was presided over by Sankar Chakraborty, District Agriculture Officer, Nagaon and was attended by Dr. B.Barman, Chief Scientist, RARS and Dr. T.P.Saikia, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK. Dr. A.K.Dey, Ex-Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Assam also graced the occasion. Dr. Biswajit Guha, Principal Scientist of the Regional Agril Research Station, Shillongani elaborately described the methods for Seed treatment, preparation of nursery bed and sowing of seeds including nutrient management and plant protection. Officers from the Agril deptt and KVK Scientists also took part. The programme ended with offering of vote of thanks by H. Kalita, Senior ADO, Hojai.
