AGP concern over autonomous council polls

The main opposition party, Asom Gana Parishad has expressed concern over the Government's move to hold the three autonomous council polls ,slated for 7th june next, by the Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes (WPT&BC) department instead of by the state election commission and demanded prior discussion with the concerned organisations and opposition parties of the state.

It may be mentioned here that the gazzette notification for the Tiwa, Thengal and deori autonomous council polls has been issued on wednesday last.

Talking to the mediapersons at Guwahati on thursday at its party headquarter, AGP leader Sarvanada Sonowal termed it "anti-democratic move" on part of the Tarun Gogoi led state govt adding 'never before in Assam polls".Mr Sonowal also demanded the state govt as well as the WPT&BC departmaent to ensure a free and fair poll.

He was also of the opinion that his party has geared-up preparations for the poll by constituting several committees to look after the council polls.According to Mr. Sonowal, the Tiwa autonomous council poll commitee comprised of ex-chief minister Prafulla kumar Mahanta, MLA Girindra kumar barua and Atul Bora( senior) as advisors and MLA's Keshab Mahanta, Nurul Husain and Ramendra Nrayan Kalita and district presidents of the party as co-ordinators respectively. While, the Thengal autonomous council poll committee includes MLA Pradip Hazarika, Atul Bora(junior) and Rajya Sabha MP Kumar Dipak Das as advisors and Hemanta Kalita, MLA's Vinod Gwala, Prabin Gogoi, Hiren Das and Liyaqat Ali Khan and concerned district presidents as co-ordinators respectively. On the other hand, the party has also constituted the poll committee for the Deori autonomous council where former party president Brindavan Goswami,Utpal Dutta and Lok sabha MP Joseph Toppo are the advisors and former MP Dr. Arun Kumar Sharma, MLA's Sushila Hazarika and Vinod Gwala with the district party presidents as co-ordinators.
