Rini Kakati lives in Harlesden, London She is a senior education & welfare worker for ethnic minorities in Department of Social Services at London Borough of Tower Hamlet and Brent. She had her MA degree in English Literature from Gauhati University. She also had PGCE (TEFL) from University of North London. She teaches English to the speaker of other language at Adult Education Centre in Wembley. She became the first women Governor at Newfield school in Harlesden. She also conducted the popular programme called "Speak for yourself" at BBC from March 1979 till 1982. This programme was specially designed to encourage people to communicate with each other.
She is the active member of UK's ruling Labour Party from Brent. In 2004, she organised for the first time NRI Convention seminar at House of Lords, Westminster as Co-ordinator for NECCI (North East Chamber of Commerce & Industry) under the guidance of Lord Swraj Paul, Lord Dholakia, Lady Ann, Lord Patel, MP Paul Andrew Daisley, Councillor Ron Anderson and ministers of Indian High Commission along with representatives from various Indian communities including media people were also attended.
She was recognised for her outstanding career and community work, socially, educationally and culturally spanning 35 years. Recently she was presented with the prestigious ‘Glory of India Award’ by the India International Society on July 18, 2009. She is the first Assamese lady to receive this prestigious award.

Police have arrested three hardcore NDFB caders and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunitions during an operation in the city's Beltola area on Monday. Peace broker and MASS leader Lachit Bordoloi has been arrested under the National Security Act on Sunday accusing him of link with ULFA. Hundreds of teachers working with the of the state's non provincialised schools will block the National Highway and railway April 2 saying the government has yet to respond to their agitation.Addressing a press conference on Friday in the city, the united body of the teachers of these schools said altogether 16,153 non provincialised schools have been striking for government steps to provincialsation.They said the decision to this effect had been taken after the failure of the Thursday's Assembly gherao where many teachers were prevented from arriving Dispur. Former Assam Chief Minister Prafula Kumar Mahanta is unhappy with the state's rice production which he says is taking a downward trend.Addressing a press conference on Friday, the former Chief Minister said the state government has been failing to properly utilise the fund meant for the agriculture sector which will have an adverse impact on the state's rural economic scenario.If it so happens, said Mahanta, the state will no longer be able to feed the growing population.
