Field Day on Farmers’ Participatory Research at Nagaon

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaon under Assam Agricultural University organised a “Field Day” on Farmers’ Participatory Action Research Programme (FPARP) on Toria (Rapeseed mustard) at Bamungaon near Nagaon on 11.02.2010. The programme is a collaborative one with AICRP on Water Management, Jorhat centre and is fully funded by the Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India. With the mission to achieve noble objective of “More crop and income per drop of water”, FPARP on water use efficient technologies for improving productivity and sustainability of Toria is in operation since November, 2009 during the current rabi season. A Self Help Group of the locality viz., “Adarsha Atmasahayak Goot” has been conducting the trial in 2 hectares of land besides growing 1 hectare of lentil under FLD programme. Addressing the gathering of around 120 farmers, Dr. B.Barman, Chief Scientist, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Shillongani highlighted the research achievements of the Station and requested the farmers to adopt the new techniques for a better and quality yield of crops. In his welcome address, Dr T.P.Saikia, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Nagaon explained the objective of KVK and Farmers’ Participatory Action Research Programme. He also requested the farmers to utilize the services of KVK for overall development of their livelihood. The gathering was also addressed by Dr. B.Guha, Principal Scientist of RARS. In his address, Dr. Guha elaborately discussed the role of micronutrients and honey bee in increasing the yield of toria. Two participating farmers also spoke on this occasion and exchanged their experiences in scientific cultivation of Toria. They also acknowledged the technical help rendered by the scientists of RARS and Krishi Vigyan Kendra time to time & expressed their satisfaction for implementation of the programme at their locality.


A peasant-scientist interaction on field problems of agriculture as well as on allied disciplines was also organized on the occasion where Drs B. Barman, and B.Guha of RARS and Dr T.P.Saikia, D. Nath, Ms. Anjumala Deka and Ms. Sibani Das, J. Dutta and U.K.Deka of KVK took part as resource persons in the interactive session. They replied a volley of queries raised by the farmers. Lastly Field visit to different demonstrated crop fields of Toria and Lentil was also organized to have on the spot assessment of the new technologies and to share the experiences of participating farmers with others. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Mr. Diren Nath of KVK Nagaon.
