Spectacular display of Aryabhatta child scientists of Udalguri district
The district level science based competition organized by Udalguri district administration in association with Aryabhatta Science Centres of Kalaigaon, Khoirabari, Bhergaon, Udalguri, Rowta and Mazbat blocks was held at Ramswarup Agarwalla Memorial HS on January 28 with various science based competitions like model making, extempore speech and poster drawing. Child scientists from all the above blocks took part in the competitions.It needs mention that under the supervision of ASTEC (Assam Science Technology & Environment Council) Guwahati block level science based competitions had already been arranged in the months of November 2009.
Hoisting of the Aryabhatta Science Centre flag by Dr.S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram,Deputy Commissioner, Udalguri marked the beginning of the day’s programme at 9 am.He also inaugurated the science model competition at 9.30 am. In his speech the DC said that changes had already taken a good turn in the district in the field of science and technology as soon as Aryabhatta Science Centres were established in each development blocks. Jayanta Kumar Das, district coordinator of National Children’s Science Congress,Udalguri (NCSC) in his welcome speech thanked the district administration of Udalguri for their support in promoting science and technology in the villages of the district.He proudly mentioned the name of Pradyunma Baruah, a class nine village student of Khagara HS (venture)who had shown his excellence by securing 2nd state rank in the science nodel competition held at Regional Science Centre, Guwahati recently.The inaugural ceremony was also addressed by Dr.Anupam Sarma, North Bank Landscape programme coordinator of WWF,India and Bhakta Chetri, Principal, Ramswarup Agarwalla Memorial English HS. A few distinguished persons namely -Mihir Kumar Barua,ADC Udalguri,Michel Ganlari SDO (S) Udalguri and Hiten Baishya of WWF,India attended the inaugural ceremony.
The open session was held at 2 pm where national level child scientists of Udalguri district, Atlanta Das and Puja Rabha of Arunodoi Academy,Tangla presented their project on “Eco-Solar Geyser”.The open session was presided over by Mihir Barua, ADC,Udalguri and Nodal Officer of district Aryabhatta Science Centres. The child scientists and judges -Pranabjyoti Das,Ratan Biswas and Anaroo Baro senior lecturers of Tangla college were felicitated with gamocha for their contribution to science & technology in the district. Hareswar Basumatari offered vote of thanks at the end on behalf of the district administration.
In science based model competition-Mouryaraj Barua , Bipul Deka (Kalaigaon block) and Himashri Barua (Mazbat block);in science based poster drawing –Danwrang Baro (Udalguri block) and Dipanjay Deka (Kalaigaon block);in science based extempore speech competition –Purnima Deka (Udalguri block) and Karabi Bania( Kalaigaon block) won first and second positions respectively.All the winners will take part in the state level Aryabhatta Science competition to be held at Assam Engineering Institute, Guwahati from 3 to 7 February,2010 under the supervision of ASTEC.Assam.

In another tragic incident following the deaths of 5 people in Udalguri and Baksa districts, a 35 years old female wild elephant was found dead in Bhootiachang tea garden today morning. Veterinary doctor doing postmortem confirmed poisoning as the cause of death.
In four separate incidents within 48 hours, 5 people have been killed by wild elephants in four places in Udalguri and Baksa district. Dead body of one Saidwmsri Daimari (24) daughter of Champa Ram Daimari of Khoirabari in Bhergaon subdivision, a student of Guwahati university has been found dead near Nonai river at Dhopguri,Tangla today morning. Her identity card and mobile phone was found with her dead body. ABSU alleged that she had been brutally raped before killing. Early Birds ,an environmental NGO of Assam arranged a free veterinary camp in nearer Deepor Beel area on Saturday on March 28 recently.The President of the organization Moloy Baruah and other members including Dr. Susil Ekka, Pranjal choudhury , Monika Das, Rana Das had participated in the camp and distributed free medicine. A ten years old wild tusker has been found dead near Nonai tea garden inside Khalingduar Reserve Forest in Udalguri district on April 1. According to eye witnesses the tusker could have died yesterday because of poisoning.It needs to mention that most of the forest officials including Range Officer of Nonai Range office have been engaged in BTC election badly effecting forest activities in the sensitive India Bhutan border area.
