Low cost candle by Assam child scientist earns appreciation

Mrinmoy Kumar Sarma, a class nine student of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School Silpuphuri, Guwahati had achieved a land mark for his invention of low cost candles which he had demonstrated at the Eastern India Science fair 2010 at Birla Industrial and Technological Museum in Kolkata from 12 to 16 January. It needs mention that Mrinmoy Sarma, in association with Amritjyoti Das of the same school also won first prize in the State Level Science Fair 2009 which was held at Regional Science Centre , Khanapara . from 22 to 24 December ,2009 where 24 teams of child scientists from different districts of Assam had participated. 8 teams out of 24 had been selected for the Kolkata Science Fair.Mrinmoy Sarma also received the best state child scientist award along with 1 year scholarship.


The title of their project was “Manufacturing of low cost candles from readily available Nahar seeds”.Mrinmoy is the only son of Dibakar Sarma and Deepa Sarma of Guwahati. Mrinmoy gives credit for his success to his grandfather Prof. Santo Nath Sarma (retired) of Mangaldai College.

A tiger from Orang National Park strayed out of the park through southern boundaryon the night of October 10. After crossing Brahmaputra it had reached Hama Char area and killed two cows and two buffaloes there.
